Individualized Education Program Introduction This assessment is focus on identifying suitable Individualized Education Program for a slow learner student who is also showing negative attitude towards his classmates, and other people around him. He has been showing lower grades and has showed no progress with his academic performance since his 1st grade level, and reported to have inappropriate behavior at school and at home. He did not undergo any individualized educational program up to the present. The purpose of this study is to gather sufficient information by conducting interview with our prospect, with his teachers, classmates, & his parents, to gather data that could help solve this problem. Problem: “Slow learner – showing inappropriate behavior towards other” Name of student – Mr. John Date of birth: November 19, 1997 Date of initiation of project: July 7, 2007, July 9, 2007 Age: 9.8 Grade level: Grade 4 Examiner – Mr. Examiner Instruments used: Welscher Intelligence Scale for Children Teacher Report Form This table shows the summary based on the teacher’s response on the interview about Mr. John’s attitude and academic performance in school. Stabbed his classmate with the point of a ballpen when his classmate tried to touch his most precious toy. His previous teachers comments that he bullies on his classmates and take their ballpens, pencils, toys and other personal things without permission. He hates being laughed, and hit his classmate on his face when his classmate laughed at his mistake. He rarely stand in front and it’s hard to convince him to participate in oral recitation. He tear his papers when he becomes irritated by confusion on solving mathematical problems and other activities which he found hard to do. He is good in drawing, and he loves to draw his favorite cartoon characters. He shows good skills in color blending. He has low grades in reading comprehension. He find it hard to answer study questions about a story told or read by the teacher. Interview with his parents On the interview with our prospect’s parents, we have found out that his mother tried to abort him by taking high dosage medicine when he was still in his womb. He was the eldest of two kids of the family. The reason why his mother tried to abort him is because she is not ready to get pregnant at first. Both of his parents were fresh graduate at that moment and have no job at all, but the abortion failed. All attention was given to him when he was born until he grew up. He was raised as a spoiled child, provided with everything he wants. They had just discovered his personality problem when he first went to school, and he always receive lower grade until this time. The table below shows Mr. John’s attitude at home based on the interview I conducted with his parents. At Home Fought with his younger brother during playtime. He don’t want to be interrupted in what he is doing. Most of his time is consumed on watching his favorite cartoon shows. He easily get bored, he hates going to church and attending social parties with his parents. He often fights with his neighbor playmates because he doesn’t want to be under shadowed. He gets bored scanning his notes and doing assignments. Most of the time he is guided by her mother in doing home works. He has poor appetite on healthy foods such as vegetables. 9. Work sample analysis: List at least six general samples that you would need to support your summary and recommendations 10. Classroom observations: List at least four general ideas of what you would ‘see’ that would support your summary and recommendations During my classroom observation, I did not let Mr. John know that I am observing him. During classes he is hard headed and very talkative. During their English lesson, the teacher had given them 15 minutes to read a short story. After reading the story, the teacher asked the students to answer the study questions found at the end of the story. His classmates answered the question on their own, but Mr. John did not begin answering the question until he was guided by the teacher. During the oral participation, he was called to two questions: one which the answer is very obvious, while the other needs reasoning. He was able to answer the easy question, but simply scratch his head on the second question. During their math lesson, he was asked to solve a worded problem. He was not able to locate the given figures that are required to solve the problem. When the teacher had provided him the given figure and the required operation to solve the problem, he then understand the process and had answered the problem correctly. Based on that observation, Mr. John found it hard to identify key ideas that are implied in what he is reading. During their Science lesson, their topic was all about food chain. He was asked by his teacher to draw the diagram of the food chain on the board. He then draw the diagram immediately and I was amazed by his artistic skills. He did it slowly and carefully as if he is creating his masterpiece. After finishing the drawing, he then bullied on his beautiful artwork, and proudly asked his teacher for a bonus point for the drawing. His classmates were behaving during the whole observation session, and perhaps Mr. John is not in the mood of making impractical jokes with his classmates. Based on my observation on the class, the pacing of instruction is appropriate at their level. Instructors guide those slow learners and had discussed topics clearly. Enough materials were provided such as: books, visual aids, and the classroom is well ventilated. Mr. John shows no interest in oral recitation, and making classroom activities. His talkative side is not appropriate at his age. Interview with Mr. John During their recess period, I personally approach Mr. John and tried to ask him some questions. I offered him the snack and told him I am a visitor who wants to know what kind of classmates he have. He replied “they are not funny! They laugh at me when I commit mistakes and scolded by our teacher.” I asked him why his teachers scold him, he replied, “Because I am not studying my lesson, and I can’t understand what they are talking about.” When asked of what subjects he hate, he replied: “I hate math problems, and I also hate reading stories because it is boring.” He like Science because he is always called by his teacher to draw diagrams.” When asked what kind attitude of teacher he wants, he replied: “I like kind teacher who guides me in all my activities when I get confused.” When I asked him if he like being at home, he replied: “yes, because I could watch my favorite TV shows, play my favorite toys.” The only thing he hates at home is when he is hurting his younger brother.” Interview with his classmates Based on the interview conducted on some of his classmates, majority of them commented that he is bad. Some of his classmates are afraid of him especially when he started to get angry. Examination Technique: I used the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children. The interview with the prospect students parents was more on the aspect of how he was raised, history of physical problems, bad experiences, and how he act at home. Test Interpretations: Based on the results of series of test given to Mr. John, his intellectual level belongs between the lowest level and the average level. He got low scores on Mathematics and English. Very low in the area of reading comprehension. His disability to understand what he reads makes it hard for him to identify ways of solving mathematical problem, and in answering logical reasoning questions in English. He has “short-term memory” problem and with sound identification. He got lower scores in spelling exam which was given orally. He has higher score in object pattern identification, perhaps because he loves to draw. His main strength is in arranging blocks and spotting object differences. Summary: For the whole session of examining my prospect, I discovered that Mr. John’s discrepancy in problem solving and analytical skill is inborn in nature. Abortion attempt is proven to have negative effect on the fetus inside the womb of a mother, and it is usually associated to mental and other physical disability. Attitude problem is developed from the spoiled treatment given to him by his parents when he was still young. Recommendations: Based on the test interpretation, Mr. John’s problem can be solved by the following recommended training strategies. 1. He may excel his reading comprehension skill by giving him tutorial classes on basic skills needed in reading. 2. He may become interested in reading by citing him inspirational success stories of famous scholars especially those in the fields he is interested. This should be done during the first 2 months of the IEP implementation. After 2 months integrate success stories of famous poets, famous mathematician, and other famous individuals in various fields. 3. He may excel his analytical skill in solving mathematical problems by exposing him to different types of problems giving him the techniques of solving those problems for the whole period of IEP implementation. 4. Providing visual aids, flash card, audio/video topics, and computer based instruction to our prospect may help him develop his problem solving capabilities. 5. He may learn to accept & respect other people around him by engaging him in groups and regular counseling program that would teach him proper values. IEP goals and objectives: Our IEP goals and objective for Mr. John is divided into the different problems as categories: A. On his Attitude Problem: Lack of self Control a.1 General Objective: Mr. John will learn self-control, and will show respect towards other people around him. a.2. Short-Term Objectives: a.2.1. When given a situation that could arouse his anger, he will learn to express his anger using moderate voice, refraining from hurting someone. Instead of hurting someone, he will politely ask the one who triggered his anger to stop from making irritating actions against him. a.2.2. Given a class situation when John accidentally hurts his classmate, he will learn to ask sincere apology for his undesirable action. a.2.3. Mr. John will eliminate his talkative side, and will listen attentively at the discussion happening in the class. B. Behavior - Lack of Interest in Assigned task or activities b.1 General Objective: Mr. John will learn to keep his temper cool, and be able to remain working at assigned task or activities without supervision or guidance. b.2 Short-Term Objective: b.2.1. Given a class activity of any length of time, he will learn to work that activity without losing his interest on it and will be determined to finish the activity on time. C. Language - Reading Skills c.1. General Objective Mr. John will learn to identify key ideas, and the subordinate ideas that are supporting the continuity of the read materials. c.2. Short-Term Objective: c.2.1 Given a story of any length, he will learn to patiently read the story and understand fully the thoughts implied in it. c.2.2 When given follow-up questions based on a story that was read, he will learn to incorporate the ideas he gathered from materials that he had read and formulate logical reasons appropriate to the question. D. Language - Spelling Skills d.1 General Objective: Mr. John will spell any word with 80% accuracy. d.2 Short-Term Objective: d.2.1. When given a set of words to spell, he will learn to listen attentively to the pronunciation of the word. E. Social Skills e.1 General Objective: Mr. John will learn to socialize with his classmates and confidently participates in class discussions. e.2 Short-Term Objective: e.2.1 Mr. John will raise his arm, and voluntarily gives his answer with or without call during class discussion. e.2.2 Mr. Bullly will learn to mingle with his friends without loosing his temper when arguments come. F. Math - Computing Skills f.1. General Objective: Mr. John will master the basic arithmetic operation and learn the techniques of solving worded problems, and other mathematical operation. Read More
