Education therefore plays vital role in society. It is especially true for people with disabilities who have to face huge number of barriers in the mainstream schools that lacks sensitive approach and facilitating environment. Special schools are significant initiatives that address hordes of issues in the inclusive education curricula. In the current times, intellectual disabilities like dyslexia, ADHD, Autism etc. have increasingly become major concern mainly because of the intangibility of the problem, especially in the early years of the children. IHC (1996) has broadly described intellectual disability as learning difficulty faced by individuals due to limitation in skills like self-care, social interaction, judgment, self-direction etc. It normally becomes evident during the developmental years of the children. The inclusion of challenged children in the education system within the broader framework of special school is defined by accommodating infrastructure, expanding course curricula that take into account their special needs and a highly sensitive approach (Booth & Ainscow, 1998). The proactive participation of community, parents and various voluntary agencies become important factor in the rehabilitation of such children within the mainstream society. My school is a special need school which has tremendously contributed to the education goals of the children with disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities. Early detection of the behavioral problems are identified and analysed to facilitate their needs and improvement. The classrooms are equipped with state of the art teaching aids like interactive boards, computers, touchboard etc. which have substantially enhanced the learning process among children with disabilities. The curricula is customized as per the individual needs of the students and has provided them with an approach that is not only non-threatening but also provides them with facilitating environment for repetitive learning tasks. The technology has helped them in learning basic skills and students have shown significant improvement in learning processes like reading, writing and comprehension. It has been faster than those who have are using the traditional ways of teaching. Apart from the technology, ensuring sensitization of community has been one of the key aspects of the school. The preconceived ideas and negative outlook towards disability as well as for persons with disability are highly detrimental issues in the educational arena, especially in special school. Veck (2007, pp 141) claims that refusal to understand or the lack of understanding of the disabled persons has adverse impacts on their social development. Sensitization of teachers, community and all stakeholders therefore, becomes critical tool for creating enabling environment for children with disabilities. Collaborative efforts within and outside the special ...Show more
