Nativist perspective: This theory was suggested by Noam Chomsky and has remained significant in understanding language acquisition in children. The nativist perspective postulates that children learn through their innate ability to organize language laws. However, the theory acknowledges that children cannot utilize their ability to organize and utilize language laws in the absence of adults. Based on this theory, children have in-born Language Acquisition Device embedded in their brains, which enable them to learn language skills as they grow (Martin, Fabes & Fabes, 2009).
Social interactionist theory: This theory emphasizes on the environment and context in which language is acquired. According to this theory, pragmatics of a language precedes grammar. Children and adults live in a negotiated environment where there is likelihood of feedbacks. As such, language develops through one’s negotiation of his or her environment (Martin, Fabes & Fabes, 2009). Language development stems from children’s desire to learn and share new information with others. The theory argues that language acquisition takes both biological and social dimensions.
Cognitive theory: In this theory, Jean Piaget postulated that symbols and structures constitute language and becomes exposed as children’s brains develop. Consequently, language is a mental activity. A hundred or two hundred years back, most of the political and economic domination came through swords and bullets. This is no longer true. In these years, science and technology have made rapid strides. At most places, machines have taken over manual labours and that is how productivity has grown manifold.
The fact that the child has internalized rules of grammar enables him to emit in accordance with these rules a large variety of different sentences, many of which he has never heard before ( Dummet, 1981. It is this productivity of language that has been stressed by Chomsky and his followers.
The human languages are known as natural language, artificial languages , constructed languages (individual groups have constructed for practical, experimental, personal or ideological reasons), formal languages, and the programming languages.
The quotation by Slobin indicates language has been a system for those who despite being destitute are able to grasp language just like the way a socially privileged child learns. Though this child learns the language as a resource, to which Chomsky indicates that those who follow him are subjected to learn the central characteristic of language.
Langauge develoemnt and speech improvement are a part of the child development till the age of 18 years. And children prsent different skills of language acquisition at differetn age levels. Language development is observed under two phases - one is receptive language (language comprehension) and productive language (language expression or speaking).
