Abstract This is a final technical report that is required for CCDP 2100 class as a course assignment. The purpose of this report is to answer the question: What could have been an easier way to protect the fuel tank of the Ford Pinto? During the crash tests of the Ford Pinto, it was realized that if the car was to be collided on the rear-end by a car travelling at 25 miles per hour, the gas tank would rapture and spill over…

Introduction

These solutions include the repositioning of the gas tank from behind to above of the rear axle in order to reduce the direct contact of the gas tank and the rear axle of the Ford Pinto. The other proposed solutions are that of placing a heavy rubber bladder inside the fuel tank, installing a plastic part between the fuel tank and the real axel, installing a stronger bumper that can withstand more impact force during a collision, and finally installing a stronger frame on the Ford Pinto that does not buckle in case of collision. The automobile industry in the US in 1920s
Karl Benz, a German engineer, was the one who designed and produced the first vehicle in 1885. He finally obtained a patent for his discovery in 1886. The vehicle was a horse carriage with an engine. His wife, Bertha Benz, set on undertaking a grueling return trip journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim, a distance of about 100 kilometers [1]. This journey was a test to probe that the car was…

Hydraulic Hybrids: A new economical and environment friendly solution to improve fuel efficiency
The main components of a hydraulic hybrid system are vehicle engine, motor/pump, accumulators, low-pressure tank, twin high pressure tank, hydraulic drive train and hydraulic transmission. A hydraulic transformer is also included in some of the systems in order to minimize the low power losses by converting output flow at any pressure. Hydraulic hybrid is identical to electric hybrid systems…
LNG as Fuel for Aircraft
Conceptual Configuration 1.1 Liquefaction Cycle Liquefaction allows gas to be stored economically. Propane Precooled Multi-Component Refrigerant Cycle (Carson’s Report, pg 221) will be used to create the LNG from the natural gas feed. This process also known as the C3-MR system is used widely in today’s LNG industries. This system uses a multi-component refrigerant, usually nitrogen, methane,…
design and construction of a prestressed concrete tank
The principle behind the prestressed concrete tank is that the compressive stresses induced by the high-strength steel tendons inside a concrete member prior to the loads being applied will balance tensile stresses inflicted in the member during the service. It`s recognized that prestressing eliminates several design limitations and conventional concrete places on load and span and allows the…
