Confessions of a Carnivore - Personal Statement Example

I disagree with Stanley’s view that man is a hypocrite. Man is not a hypocrite.  It is man’s nature to eat meat.  It is common knowledge that even our early ancestors are carnivores and there is a reason for this.  Meats have very high protein content and high in iron and vitamins.  Humans are not solely carnivores; we are omnivores, surviving from the intake of both meat and vegetables. Stanley even contradicts himself in his article. On the one hand, he argues that he wants to be a vegetarian.

  But on the other hand, he also says that “it is hard to fight with a body evolved for meat-eating” (Stanley 113).  By focusing on humans as carnivores, Stanley overlooks the deeper problem of hunger that beset some nations.  In countries where there is a lack of fertile land for growing vegetables and only meat is available, there is no other alternative but to become a carnivore.  If they choose to become vegetarians, it would be more costly for the country because they will have to import the vegetables.

Stanley claims that overpopulation is slowly depleting the earth’s resources, but we don’t need him to tell us that.  Anyone familiar with the problem of overpopulation has long known that sooner or later we have to act aggressively to curb population growth and think of sustainable ways to guarantee that humans will still have clean air to breathe and food to eat to continue to exist.
