Jordy Liang WRIT 340 Elizabeth Weiss of Ethics Ethics is considered to be the most important essence in life. The norms and customs within the society give life a more meaning in itself as a long yet an ever-evolving journey. It is difficult for an individual to go the hardship and bitter way without having a set of his/her own rules of ethics. Ethics is basically a way of life that guides my actions to the state or place I desire. I believe that the most important thing in life is to be able to enrich the existence of both my own life and others. The main component of my ethics would be: Flexibility, Honesty, Purpose, Excellence, and Attitude. I will be honest in everything I do. I will value the truth and only the truth. The true essence of establishing relationship with other people or even the company I will work for is to be able to maintain trust between two parties. In order for both parties to maintain trust, honesty is the main ingredient that is needed. Honesty should be embedded in every action and information, which will retain each party’s credibility. I will only say words that express my current feeling; the most at that time and will not conceal any meaning behind it. I will try my best to be as flexible as possible. Not every aspect of life can be governed with strict set of rules and guidance. There are times when these rules cannot be applied thoroughly. By being flexible I will allow and make myself able to see the bigger picture of the matter and I will be able to solve the problem more efficiently. I will apply the most flexible way in approaching every matter that I encounter in order to achieve the best possible result. I will make sure that the element of flexibility exists in my every conduct and also every interaction that I will have in the future with other individual. Every decision and action that I will make has a justifiable purpose behind it, in which I believe and not just a mere meaningless act. Purpose is the main component that will justify the action. In my every action I will absolutely have a strong purpose that justify my action and not just a mere reckless reaction to something. The purpose of my action will not be biased and will be based on the best possible choice between myself and the other party. My actions will purposely be based on choices that would not make other people feel disadvantaged. Everything that I produce and contribute to my job will be the best work that I can produce to the best of my ability and nothing less will be acceptable. I will always remember to put extra effort and detail in every action and decisions that I make. By offering something that I feel is the best would maintain my credibility and make other people respect me to the degree that I deserve. Besides respect, this action will help me make other people feel obligated to give back the best product or service that they can produce. I will always maintain positive attitude and will never show any negative attitude to other people. I will never treat others as lower than me but rather will treat them as equal regardless of their race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. I will always be respectful to their opinion and try my best to attend to their needs. I will try to understand their feelings when interacting with them and try as much to understand their perspective when encountering argument from other people. I will always maintain my professionalism and good approachable attitude all the time regardless what type of individual that I am interacting with at the time. Discussion Growing up in the entrepreneurial family influenced me significantly on my personality and how I act towards life. My family, particularly my parents contributed much on this influence. As a family, we own a store in our hometown and the main component of ethics that this family business highly respects is Honesty and Attitude. As a family, we sell products to our customers on a daily basis. Because of this, we are required to be honest to our customer on the product specification in order to give them the information that they need before purchasing the product. Besides honesty, our attitude in serving them can also be the main factor that will affect the consumer choice in purchasing our product. Although currently, my parents have an official code of conduct for their store, they have trained their employee on the values that they believe serve customers best. These have been a habitual practice throughout my parent’s life till now they are newlywed. They embedded in us these habits when raising us as their children. This is the main reason why I take such importance on my family values and turn it into my own ethics or my own way of life. NiccoloMachiaveli states that in order for a prince to be suited to be a ruler of a country, he has to attain a “Flexible Disposition”. This will help the prince to oversee which one is evil to good and vice versa “as fortune and circumstances dictate”. Personally, I am an aspired leader that hope will own my own company in the near future. In order for me to be a suitable and strong leader, it is necessary for me to be flexible at certain condition to be able to dictate which action that I should choose for the greater good. Personally, I am a fan of rap music. As for now my personal favorite rap singer is Kanye West. I believe that every rap singer has his/her own meaning and purpose in constructing the lyrics of their song. Each rap song has its own purpose that the rapper wants to convey to the public. Sometimes the lyric can be about racism that still exists in the US and also it can be about the personal first hand experience that the rapper goes through. The strength of the purpose can be seen by the popularity of the song. Songs with depth meaning will most likely gather more public’s favor. Inspired by this musician I pledge myself to be able to convey my purpose through out my action. I want other people to see everything that I have done as something that hold a greater purpose behind it. I believe that purpose is a key element to express your action towards other people. Other people may not understand your purpose at first but eventually they will. Purpose is also the only thing that can justify your doing because purpose can be considered the scale for right and wrong. One simple example will be the Indonesian revolution to the Dutch colony. It might be true that there is no justifiable reason for war and violence but at the same time living under pressure is not tolerable for any being in the world, hence the purpose behind the action. There are a lot of cultures on the surface of the Earth. One particular culture that affects my ethics mostly is the Japanese culture. Japanese people put a humongous amount of detail and perfection in every aspect of their life. It shows onto their art, food culture, fashion, customer service, and their language itself, which leads to the quality and excellence of their culture’s product. Growing up watching Japanese culture carefully has impacted my perspective about life significantly. Japanese culture taught me that nothing but the best should be acceptable in our every day life aspect. By implementing this culture as my way of life will absolutely enhance my performance on approaching things that I will do both in the present and future. As a USC student, I am exposed to the Trojan culture that helps me cultivate and develop a better understanding about the business world and the global society as well. USC has been the primary resource for me to develop my conduct of life in the past few years. Immersed in the Trojan culture has helped me discover more facts about life that are priceless for me. One particular mentor that I have the privilege to meet is Professor Patrick Henry from the Entrepreneurship department of USC. I have taken several classes with him and learn a lot from him. All the elements that I have mentioned above are basically the essence of Entrepreneurship that he taught me. Although Professor Henry might have only taught the business aspect of those elements, I am able to see the bigger picture of each of those elements and be able to implement them on the bigger part of my life.
