The women in Nigeria had always been willing and active participants in the development and progress of the country. They had established cottage industries, worked in the fields with men, even helped in the construction works. Yet their status could never rise to that of a common man. It has always been a bold question mark in front of Human Rights Organizations. Even though they had been granted equal rights in the constitution of the country, yet the women in Nigeria are still under the stern dominion of males.

They are suppressed and oppressed. Even the women of rich and wealthy cannot avoid the usual fate like a common Nigerian woman. They are usually forced into child marriage, feminine genital disfigurement, rape, widow legacy as well as polygamy. “There are no boundaries that protect women from such injustice”. Today, these Nigerian women are trying their best to avail a respected and successful place in the professional life of the country. They are taking active parts in almost every field of life.

However, societal traditions and values are erecting huge obstacles in the ways of these working women. The researcher has observed that the working women in Nigeria are subjected to gender discrimination, sexual harassment, social degradation, and male chauvinistic prejudice. The researcher also noticed that the case grew even grimmer in the case of the women working in electronic media, such as radio, television, film, etc. Electronic Media is basically a “Broadcast or storage media that take advantage of electronic technology.

They may include television, radio, Internet, fax, CD-ROMs, DVD, and any other medium that requires electricity or digital encoding of information” (Business Dictionary, 2011). Being the softer sex and the symbol of beauty and attraction, females are always warmly welcomed in this field. This aspect offers a sad fact regarding the status of women as a mere thing to play with. The Nigerian electronic media is no different at all.
