BMGT 4356: Organizational Change & Development Fall I Article Number: 3 Topic: Behaviors of leaders that have organizational impact Date: 9/29/2014 Reference Burke, E. (January 5th, 2014). “Companies Need to Be More Aware of Risk.” The Wall Street Journal. Article Summary The article discusses the risk middle-level managers pose to the organization with their leadership skills or lack of it. Research that has been used in this article indicate that among the leaders in any organization, risky behaviors among the managers increase as people move down the corporate ladder leaving the large number of risky behavior managers at the middle level.

This is attributed to the lack of formal training and development of these managers once they are promoted to this managerial level from regular employees (Burke, 2014). Relevance to course material Managers at whatever level of management in an organization require being equipped with special skills about management. These skills range from communication with the employees, managerial skills, motivational skills, talent skills and ethical skills among others. All these skills are supposed to make a manager well rounded in the organizational management and to use them to handle employees in a professional manner.

Managers are supposed to be leaders and set good examples to their employees through their behavior as they are a reflection of the company. My perspective The discussion by the author of the journal is true and I have experienced it a couple of times. The middle level managers are charged with interns and the ones I have encountered did not know how to talk let alone treat interns. We were made domestic workers in most organizations running errands for the manager such as getting the mail and making coffee and we learnt little about the organization and the course.

I attributed this to their lack of managerial skills which the senior managers are equipped with through numerous trainings and leadership workshops.
