Current Trend in the Area of Telecommunication Introduction The international market of telecommunication services is increasing at brisk speed. The collaboration between the two economic pressures, ‘demand pull’ and ‘supply push’ have made the telecommunication segment as one of the rapidly growing sectors in the whole world. The telecommunication is one of the major constituents for any kind of communal, educational, and political movement. The impact of essential forces which regulate the demand and supply of telecommunication services has been enlarged by the international trend in its open markets. As a consequence of current trend in telecommunication, majority of the telecom service providers are now functioning privately. Major improvements have also come about to stimulate competition at the domestic, local and international levels. Besides, the liberalization in the telecommunication industry had also commenced considerable changes in areas like ‘value-added services’ and long range calls among others (ITU, “Trends and developments in the telecommunication environment”). Current Trend in Telecommunication Despite global economic decline, the telecommunication sector has developed continuously. It is due to this reason that major contribution to the development arises from the emerging markets. The increased utilization of mobile services is one of the significant drivers for the development of telecommunication. In recent era, one of the major trends in the area of telecommunication has been the wireless technology. Though the markets of mobile services in telecommunication are reaching at saturation point, the users of several developing economies are also showing continuous development in wireless technology. Moreover, several organizations in the mature and developing markets are adjusting their business structure according to the increased demand of wireless system. The markets for telecommunication are becoming more competitive in providing wireless and the 3G services while other telecom services such as fixed line continue to drop back with respect to effectiveness (ITU, “Trend in Telecommunication Reform 2010/11”). Description of Wireless Technology Wireless technology help to transmit data in long range without any cables. It is usually measured as a division of telecommunication. Wireless technology enables long-distance communication developing an incorporated network. Through wireless technology, people can use the internet with the assistance of low power radio signals. The most important use of wireless technology can be illustrated with reference to laptop users who usually travel to distant place. Another important use of wireless technology is the mobile wireless network which links through satellite (Krishnamurthy & Rajashekara, “Current Trends in Wireless Technologies in Academic Libraries”). In present days, the wireless technology has comprehensive application because of its easy installation and flexibility. Organizations often replace their old LAN system to implement wireless technology in their business because it allows moving computer from one place to another place without losing the internet connectivity and affecting other devices. The most important uses of wireless technology in present days can be seen in educational institutions, airports, and sometimes in coffee bars. They offer customers with constant internet usage to make their work easier. Making a wireless network in organization is an inexpensive technique to accomplish the chosen connection with convenient environment. Majority of wireless systems are user-friendly and anyone can amend or modify the settings according to their suitability. Wireless technology does not require any regulatory approval for individual connection (Krishnamurthy & Rajashekara, “Current Trends in Wireless Technologies in Academic Libraries”). However, one of the major disadvantages of wireless technology can be related with the aspect of range. For instance, through wireless adopters it is tough to get internet connection beyond 50-75 meters. There are some wireless connectors which work on frequencies that are used by other wireless connectors. As a result, it can cause serious intervention and the speed of internet can get reduced (Krishnamurthy & Rajashekara, “Current Trends in Wireless Technologies in Academic Libraries”). Trend in Wireless Technology in The Area of Telecommunication The expansion of wireless technology in telecommunication has created a significant amount of enthusiasm among organizations and citizens. The wireless technology has successfully replaced the traditional mobile radio and fixed landline systems. The trend in wireless technology is determined by the demand of pioneering technologies, as it transforms the life of people in convenient ways. As the uses of internet is increasing progressively, the uses of wireless technology is becoming more popular for organizations. The affordability and easy accessibility of wireless technology has made it more demanding in the current era (Hewlett-Packard Development Company, “Wireless Technology”). In 2006, there were almost 165 million telecom professionals using wireless technology to resolve business issues and attain competitive advantages over its rivals. Through wireless technology, organizations can perform more efficiently, provide enhanced customer services, and earn higher profit. Wireless technology is flexible and helps to increase both the efficiency and association between office employees. Through wireless solutions, organizations can generate value for their clients. People in present days want more data with rapid speed and flexibility and wireless technology provides people with faster downloads of important files. It also lets users to share information and use devices such as printers easily, making it easier for students and/or employees to work jointly on any particular project. The trend of wireless technology in telecommunication will be described in three major areas, which are education, travelling, and healthcare, to understand the impact of wireless solution to these sectors and to identify how the tendency of people is driving towards wireless system (Hewlett-Packard Development Company, “Wireless Technology”). Wireless Technology Trend in Education In present day, technology is progressively becoming a way for influencing students and is turning out to be a technique for communication. The technology which was viewed as an aspect of wealth previously now became an issue for education. The number of educational facilities for private devices is increasing rapidly. The existing selections for staying connected from distant places have indicated the introduction of new class system with devices that mix the functions of several facilities. With the growth of wireless technology, the availability of internet is no longer obligated to a tied connection (Cognizant Technology Solutions, “Emerging trends in Education Publishing”). In educational institutions, the wireless technology is used as a substitute teaching and education tool. In this 21st century, there is a growing trend within educational organizations to use ‘mobile wireless technology’ for the purpose of teaching a wide range of students. The movement towards applying ‘mobile wireless technology’ in learning is a current drift and is becoming widely used equipment for advanced education. Mobile computing signifies incessant access to internet resources without being affected by the constraints in terms of time and place. The idea for using ‘mobile wireless technology’ in educational institutions is flexibility and reachability (Kim & Et. Al., “An Introduction to Current Trends and Benefits of Mobile Wireless Technology Use in Higher Education”). According to the report of Swett (2002), above 90% of public academies and 80% of private academies in the USA use wireless technologies and solutions in their campuses. Some universities for instance ‘University of Minnesota’ and ‘University of South Dakita’ necessitate students to have their personal mobile wireless devices for conducting school projects (Kim & Et. Al., “An Introduction to Current Trends and Benefits of Mobile Wireless Technology Use in Higher Education”). It is expected that in upcoming days, the educators and the students will use several wireless devices in schools and colleges for educational purposes as school campuses are being restructured for wireless networking. Chief areas and locations in several university campuses such as lecture rooms, libraries, research centers, and canteens are already equipped with wireless technology. The research of Boggs (2002) reveals that in the year 2001, almost 57% of library areas of USA were furnished with wireless technology and the figure turned into 88% in the year 2003 (Kim & Et. Al., “An Introduction to Current Trends and Benefits of Mobile Wireless Technology Use in Higher Education”). The following graph will show growth the trend of usage of wireless technology in major areas of university campuses in 2001 and 2003: Source: (Kim & Et. Al., “An Introduction to Current Trends and Benefits of Mobile Wireless Technology Use in Higher Education”) The implementation of wireless technology necessitates huge funding and thus maximum academies and universities assign major portion of their budget for developing wireless technology with the view that technology has a crucial part in education. In the year 1999-2000, the educational institutions of USA spent around 2.7 billion USD for developing the hardware and software system. The trend for spending also can be seen in small institutions. For instance, a small college in New York named ‘Hudson Valley Community College’ spent 100,000 USD for offering educational courses by wireless laptops. Another small college named ‘St. Louis Community College’ financed 120,000 USD to arrange wireless-enabled laptop system in its education. By 2004, the expenditure for using technology in education became 5.6 billion USD in USA. The vast investment in technology supports the development in educational quality (Kim & Et. Al., “An Introduction to Current Trends and Benefits of Mobile Wireless Technology Use in Higher Education”). Wireless Technology Trend in Travelling The usage of wireless technologies is emerging rapidly in travelling sectors such as airports or holes. For any business travellers, wireless technology assists monitoring the transport selections availability, for holiday travellers, wireless technology assists in directing the ways, even a hotel manager can also use wireless technology to welcome premium customers and can provide schedule for business meetings. Thus, wireless technology has dramatic impact on the travelling sector. The new developing wireless structure can ceaselessly change the travelling experience of people. The technological innovation in travelling started with the increased use of internet in 2000. Currently, as telecommunication market is moving towards maturity phase, and the wireless technologies are generating a resurrection towards new interest (Rose, “Emerging Trends in Wireless Technology and The Global Travel Industry”). Presently every major airline has executed wireless technology which works on wireless devices such as laptops, smartphones, or PDAs. For instance, American Airlines offers travellers with wireless access to aircraft timetables and loyalty package information. ‘Verizon Airfone’ allows customers to use wireless messaging and other wireless facilities. ‘Delta Airlines’ provides its regular customers the facility to check account balances, transfer moneys, and assess transaction records through ‘Air2Web Mobile Internet Platform’. ‘Northwest Airlines’ has personalized their portals for wireless browsers which offers services like weather information, airline status report, accessing travel registration, and so on. Furthermore, ‘Boeing’ provides customers with high – speed wireless connectivity by using their own wireless technologies in the aviation cabin (Rose, “Emerging Trends in Wireless Technology and The Global Travel Industry”). According to survey of ‘My AvantGo Travel’ in the year 2003, it can be seen that majority of travelers are involved in wireless access of flight report, weather report, aviation routes, etc. Form the survey it has been seen that 65% of respondents were concerned about receiving flight discounts notification in their wireless devices and 67% wish to receive flight delay report via wireless devices. Another survey of ‘Yesawich, Pepperdine & Brown’ depicted that travellers have a habit to use wireless technology in airports. In 2009, the survey of ‘Stat/MDR’ reported that 98% of respondents use e-mail services in the public wireless system (Rose, “Emerging Trends in Wireless Technology and The Global Travel Industry”). The following graph will display the use of wireless applications in airports: Source: (Rose, “Emerging Trends in Wireless Technology and the Global Travel Industry”) With the growing trend of wireless technology in travelling, the key hotel chains are also using it to provide with efficient guest services. Many top players in hospitality sector use wireless technology for increasing the effectiveness in guest registration and check-out procedures such as credit card approval, guest reception through wireless printing system, etc. In recent times the wireless technology emerged as one of the newest equipments in hotel businesses. The additional services related with wireless technology have not begun in hospitality sector, but wireless technology provides countless prospects to develop the hospitality services (Rose, “Emerging Trends in Wireless Technology and The Global Travel Industry”). Wireless Technology Trend in Healthcare Wireless technology plays significant part in healthcare solutions. Through wireless technology people can stay connected with their relatives, help emergency relief workers to respond rapidly and track health related issues quickly. According to report of ‘Informa Telecoms & Media’, the mobile network covered almost 90% of the people worldwide and in 2008 the global cellular phone penetration was almost 50%. In rural areas where internet connectivity has not reached yet, the wireless mobile technology help to prevent any health related issues and provide support to poor people. Wireless mobile technologies develop the distribution of public health statistics such as disease eruption and inhibition message; enable remote conference, identification, and treatment (Kinkade & Verclas, “Wireless Technology for Social Change: Trends in Mobile Use by NGOs”). From the study of ‘Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research’ in 2007 on trend of using wireless technology in healthcare sector, it can be found that NGO personnel use wireless mobile technology in several ways. Among all respondents 39% had depicted that, they use wireless technology for sharing photo and video, and almost 28% described that wireless technology helps in gathering and sending information. The uses of wireless technology in healthcare are very extensive and crucial for NGOs. From the study it has also been found that majority of respondents are expected to increase the use of wireless technology for healthcare in future. Through wireless technology, people can easily spread health related information to physicians, doctors, manage patients, observe public health and ultimately raise the competency of managerial systems (Kinkade & Verclas, “Wireless Technology for Social Change: Trends in Mobile Use by NGOs”). In healthcare sector, wireless technology is attaining increasing significance in the current era. According to several industry reports, USA spends almost 9 billion USD for wireless technology in healthcare sector in 2010 (Ayar, “UWB Wireless Video Transmission Technology in Medical Applications”). The following graph will show the changing trends of using wireless technology in healthcare sector in USA: Source: (Ayar, “UWB Wireless Video Transmission Technology in Medical Applications”). Healthcare industry is moving towards wireless technology to expand the quality of services. Wireless technology help to decrease expenditures and allow healthcare experts to quickly trace remedial information regarding patients. So far, wireless technology have been positioned to conduct activities such as registration assessments, medicine orders, supply record, emergency communication, telemedicine, notification, and checking medical equipment position. The critical task of wireless technology is the recovery ability in term of patient care. It adds great significance with respect to efficiency and competency of healthcare workers. The trend of accepting wireless technology in the healthcare sector is high and is likely to increase even more. Healthcare specialists search for wireless technology to substitute cables as a way of developing the level of proficiency, flexibility and security (Ayar, “UWB Wireless Video Transmission Technology in Medical Applications”). Technical Characteristics of Wireless Technology in Telecommunication Generally, wireless technology uses the radio contacting system. The major technical improvements in the area of radio contacting system are disposition of enormous local, domestic, and global networks. Wireless technology uses the multichannel ‘trunked radio system’. The trunk system comprises of strong signaling methods, virtually infinite addressing abilities, intact incorporation of message, unified mobile telecommunication service, and multisite networking skills. Modulation effectiveness helps to raise the amount of information that is transmitted through wireless system. Present wireless technologies are being installed using digital modulation as the access system. A significant technological improvement in the wireless technology is the result of rapid evolution in usual cordless system. Besides the improvements in semiconductor technology also accelerates the power existing in the wireless network and in the equipment used to access the network. Developments were being made in wireless systems to preserve the utilization of battery power. Present wireless technologies are equipped with digital incorporated circuits, radio frequency devices, and advanced technology which helped to improve the performance of wireless devices in the telecommunication network (Hatfield, “Technological Trends in Wireless Telecommunications”). The recent trend in the wireless technology can be illustrated with reference to the introduction of ‘WiMAX’. WiMAX is made on the basis of criteria established by IEEE and ETSI. WiMAX has the capability to work in several frequency bands within the range of 2-66 GHz. The new WiMAX can be beneficial in metropolitan, residential and rural areas to minimize of obstacles caused due to low bandwidth. WiMAX can provide wireless internet access up to 50 kilometers for secure locations. It is a ‘second generation protocol’ which uses the bandwidth more resourcefully than before. The rate of intrusion is quite low in WiMAX, and it is designed for transferring higher rate of files in long range (Krishnamurthy & Rajashekara, “Current Trends in Wireless Technologies in Academic Libraries”). Future Trend of Wireless Technology Remarkable changes are taking place in the area of wireless technology of telecommunication. The cellular phone is turning into mobile devices which can support more applications than before which are similar to the capability of a computer system. With the rapid development of wireless technology, sending or receiving any power point presentation or any document file from outside of organization or even outside of home is no longer an annoying or difficult task. The endless desire of people to access internet from anywhere has contributed to the future development of wireless technology. In 2006 there were almost 2.3 billion wireless subscribers. The uses of mobile are also changing as high speed internet connections tend to attract larger customer attention. Presently, it can be observed that radio technology is inter-related with wireless technology. In future the probable blend of Bluetooth and Ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies is likely to promote improved wireless connectivity (Upton & Steel, “The Current State of Technology and Future Trends in Wireless Communications and Applications”). It is expected that, present telecommunication market will transform in dramatic manner in the upcoming days. Majority of transformation will happen towards the fusion of new wireless technologies. These transformations in telecommunication will lead to complete reform of the global market (Korner & Zhang, “Some Future Trends for Telecommunication Markets”). Wireless technology still requires rapid development so as to reduce the rate of interventions which is one of the significant limitations of this technology.
