Although a number of negative consequences have been raised in regard to their use, their many benefits cannot be ignored or outweighed. Song defines a smartphone as “a mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a basic current mobile phone does” (n.d. p. 1). In the workplace, smartphones improve knowledge sharing, strengthen relationships between workmates and their superiors, and promote autonomy (Pitichat, 2013). In education, smartphones are powerful learning tools (Bakon & Hassan, 2013).

In social life, people are able to stay connected as they share messages, photos, and videos (Sarwar & Soomro, 2013). This paper argues that although smartphones have a number of negative consequences, their benefits in people's social and professional lives are numerous. The paper begins by defining smartphones, it then discusses their present and potential applications, highlights other technologies that compete with smartphones, discusses their benefits in social and professional lives, and possible improvements in the future.
