Interviews are conducted in any criminal event for the sole purpose of gathering information from the people who have or those that may have the familiarity that is required for the criminal investigation (Lee, et al., 2007). This information may come from the victim/s of the crime or any other person/s that could not have had a direct with the crime but was present when the crime was committed (Tong, et al., 2009). Interrogation is a process where acquired information is matched with a given suspect in order to offer an acknowledgment.

It is normally done to obtain value facts that are needed to pursue the case. It helps to get rid of the innocent person, it gives leads in recognizing the guilty person and as well as obtaining a confession (Orthmann, et al., 2012). The act of listening is very vital in an investigation. It does not matter the amount of preparedness and experience that investigators and interrogators have but the ability to conduct a successful interview highly depends on the listening skills (Lee, et al., 2007).

Active listeners are more effective in conducting the investigation. Documenting of the interview is another objective in investigation. Majority of routine cases involving interviews or hand written notes that are made by investigators at the scene, and after scene of crime are meant to serve as sufficient documentation (Palmiotto, 2004). Note taking during the interview should be done in a way that does not distract the witness to extent of refusing to give more information, or making the interviewer look like his or she is inattentive.

However the best form of documentation is sound and or visual recording (Orthmann, et al., 2012). An arrest is the conclusion of the investigator’s efforts and is argued to be one of the tedious tasks of any law enforcement officer (Becker & Dutelle, 2012).
