We shall first build upon some of the necessary leadership characteristics identified by Vadim Kotelnikov, founder of Ten Business e-Coach. 1. “Start with yourself” – It is easy for managers to ask their employees to innovate but unless they are already open, creative, motivated, focused, knowledgeable, experienced etc. themselves, they must ’practice before they preach’. 2. “Visionary purpose and goals” – An organization without a defined purpose has nowhere to go so no justification even to exist, and an organization without a visionary goal has no hope for the future so has not one else to blame but itself for any failure either.

It is the leadership’s responsibility to set the stage for the rest to follow. 3. “Developing innovation-adept culture” – This may be a large undertaking, but it is the establishment of this framework that allows innovation to flourish. The strength of the institutionalized culture also strengthens the cohesion of the organization and enables it to achieve more. It lends identity to every person in the organization and fosters the spirit to be innovative. The author also mentions a ‘new systemic approach to innovation’.

This is interesting because success does not necessarily mean transforming “research results into commercially successful products… not all research leads to innovation and not all innovation is research-based” (Kotelnikov, Vadim). Instead, innovation is systemic, and a systemic approach arises from complex interactions. As we saw in the study of Samsung’s new innovation supporting culture, the employees had the freedom of challenging the status quo and even question their superiors. This open atmosphere is only possible if the leaders encourage their employees to be creative and frank, and the permission to express their opinions and ideas.
