Introduction

There are competitive advantages to be had. Companies could do better by outsourcing a function to a company that is specialised in that particular function and hence cut costs (Information Technology Advisory Committee, 2003, p. 3). Outsourcing is also a typical choice for young start-ups and for organisations going into new business lines (Information Technology Advisory Committee, 2003, p. 2). Such organisations can save time and energy on information technology and concentrate on opening new markets by contracting a third party to render those services immediately (Information Technology Advisory Committee, 2003, p. 2). Moreover, an organisation may outsource to attain information technology efficiencies (Information Technology Advisory Committee, 2003, p. 3). Lastly, outsourcing decision is often made based on financial benefits. Through information technology efficiencies or through cost sharing with other customers served by the contractor, costs could be lowered (Information Technology Advisory Committee, 2003, p. 3). Furthermore, outsourcing mitigates the risk of investing in the wrong technology or significantly reduces the capital, freeing up financial resources for more strategic investments (Information Technology Advisory Committee, 2003, p. 3).
