Running head: ACADEMIC SKILLS Quantitative and Academic skills (economy) s College or s To finish their college successfully and to get a dream job, the student should be or become equipped with relevant knowledge and skills. That is, the students will be already equipped with certain knowledge and skills, and so at the college they will build on those strengths and will get to know newer things, overriding their weaknesses. So, this paper will look at my strengths and weakness in relation to my course, Business Economics, and will also discuss, how I plan to address my weaknesses, while building on my strengths. Quantitative and Academic skills (economy) My Strengths Strengths will always give ‘lengths’ to reach one’s targets. The strength of mine includes the ability to think logically, which gets reflected in my Mathematical ability. That is, I was able to think logically from childhood because of which I was able to all the Math sums without difficulty. Even though I had good teachers to help me in Math, did all my homework and had a good friend circle to discuss about mathematical problems, I think having a logical mind helped me to shine better in Math. This ability in Math continued in the higher class as well. Apart from the ‘logical’ reason, I was interested in Math because of its image of being the Universal language. That is, there will be countries in which some languages will not be spoken, but Math will be there. For example, Zulu will not be spoken, may be in Vietnam, but simple additions to high-level calculus will be practiced or calculated there. So, my interest and strength is, my ability to do Mathematical sums with ease. Another strength of mine is my ability to motivate my friends in all the situations, with the aid of my communication skills. My communication skills has been put to effective use on several occasions, when I had been asked to make presentations to fellow students and other audience members. My weaknesses Weaknesses will always blocks one’s targets. The problems area, which I consider as my weakness, is my fluency in English. Being from South Korea, my English is not that perfect, because of my mother tongue influences and due to lack of English speaking environment. With the daily conversations with my family members and friends always happening in Korean, I got little opportunity to use and converse in English. This affected my speaking and writing skills in English. So, when compared to my college mates, my English is little weak. Plan to address weaknesses The weaknesses, I discussed in the above sections can be addressed by me, if I put in the efforts, and also due to the changed environment of being an International Student. My English can be easily improved if I make genuine attempts to converse in English as often as possible. I am a kind of person who doesn’t want to be in a shell, and just want to communicate as much as possible. So, if I use my positive trait of communication skills in combination with English, I can correct my weakness. I have a good circle of friends who I can converse with in English. They also are very supportive and can really help if I falter. Also, as there are a lot of English speaking environment available in this phase of life, I can fully utilize it to improve my English proficiency. Apart from communication with fellow students and known persons in English, I plan to read English newspapers as much as possible to improve my English. I think that English newspapers will improve my reading skills, which can be very beneficial in different college classes. That is, by getting to read new and different words in the newspapers, I will the get chance to use dictionary more often. I have a good collection of book dictionaries and computer based dictionaries, which apart from giving the meanings can also provide the correct pronunciation and sounds as well. So, when I read the newspapers I get see a lot of new English words, which I can immediately refer in the dictionaries to get their correct meanings and pronunciations. When I get both these aspects right, I will try to use it in real life situations, thus building my vocabulary and attaining good English speaking and writing skills. Also, I plan to watch and listen to maximum English news channels to improve my English. These are the ‘external’ plans I have; ‘internally’ I plan to improve English by utilizing my course. That is, during the course, when the assignments like this one are given, I plan to do it in an effective manner with or without guidance from some experts, resources etc. That is, the English acquired through this process will be very helpful. So, I think with these initiatives, I can overcome my weakness in English and shine in that subject as well. Plan to build on my strengths As I discussed before my strength is my strong grasp of Math. I have been able to use my mathematical abilities effectively in different stages of life, and I am sure, I will able to do the same thing in this important phase of my life. That is, I will be able to utilize math for my study of Business Economics, in various modules. With my course offering various Maths based papers in each module, I am sure I can build on my strength and do those papers exceedingly well. I can study and complete the math-based papers like the Applied Statistical Methods, Accounting for Business, Mathematics for Economics, International Corporate Finance etc. with ease. These papers will need higher level Math, more than I handled previously. However, I am confident that my Math ability and interest will spur me to go through these papers without any major difficulties. As these papers will need a lot of analysis, I can improve those skills also, along with my logical skills. So, my strength in Math will help me to do the Math related papers, and will also help me to strengthen my analytic skills. I hope to achieve a lot through my course of study From time immemorial, human nature was not to remain ‘static’ but keep on moving throughout their lives to enhance their lives by learning new, new things. That is, a successful person will not like to be “stationed” in one place, but move to uncharted territories and achieve advancement in their lives with the help of good education. Good academic education should start from a good school and ending in a good college. So, to gain excellent academic credentials, the college education is the key, which can open the door for a great career. So, through my course of study, I hope to learn as many things as possible and achieve good growth in my professional life. Firstly, I hope the paper on introduction to economics and the business environment will initiate me into the course in a smooth manner. Then with specific papers on Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International and European Business, Quantitative and Academic Skills, Accounting, financial side etc, etc., I think I will be fully equipped to deal with the work environment and all the situations that will arise in my future employer’s place or organization.
