Application Paper on Jerry McGuire The paper is aimed to apply the lessons learned about the process of listening. This is through the analysis of the movie Jerry Maguire which is directed by Cameron Crowe and produced in 1996. Listening based on the class reference is a process more than hearing since understanding and responding. The hearing process is composed of the 5 stages namely hearing, attending, understanding, remembering and responding. In contrary to common notion, listening is a challenging act that needs effort.

For that matter, most people fail to listen mindfully. This is due to the lack of any of the stages in the listening process, which is the common reason for misunderstanding and miscommunication between people. In the movie under study, most of the characters exhibited mindless listening in several events. This can be attributed to the field that the characters are in which is sports promotion of athletes. In such fields, talking is more valued than listening because agents need to sell and to promote their clients to advertisers and other stakeholders in sports.

This is productive specifically when the speaker can deliver his messages successfully. The main character, Jerry Maguire is a perfect example of a good speaker. He has 72 clients during the start of the movie which is considered as a successful feat, thus, he is one of the most important sports agents in the company. This changed when he realized that he needs to change his lifestyle. The situation where he is in can be considered to be caused by the lack of listening skills. He constantly talks in his job and that became his normal manner of communicating with other people.

Lack of listening skills can lead to miscommunications and for Jerry Maguire lack of proper connection with other people. He always tends to speak which is considered as one of the most common examples of challenges in the process of listening. The length of time he put to each client in a day is so short for any proper manner of communication or proper practice of the listening process. Based on the life of Jerry Maguire, there are points that can be given emphasis regarding the importance of listening.

One is the fact that human beings are social animals, for that matter, we are in need of communicating with one another. Communication is successful when there is a mutual exchange of information, thus, listening is equally important as speaking. As people must learn to communicate efficiently, listening skills are also needed to be developed to be able to achieve and to strengthen interpersonal relationships. Another is the need for humans to continuously study to develop cognitive skills, for survival and adaptation in the increasingly complex human interface.

Listening can be considered as one of the most important ways in achieving and imbibing knowledge. Thus, in the human being’s constant hunger for knowledge, listening is an essential practice. In conclusion, Jerry Maguire is a representation of the effects of inefficient communication due to the failure to listen mindfully. Work Cited Cameron, Crowe. Jerry Maguire. TriStar, 1996.
