Not Without My Daughter This is a 1991 movie about the lives of members of the Mahmoody family. The father, Sayed Moody is an Iranian physician who has migrated to the United States but later on at some point decides to come back to Iran. He travels back to his native country with his wife Betty and daughter Mahtob. The main reason for this journey back home is to visit his family. However, at some point during their stay in Iran, Moody reveals to Betty that he is of the opinion the family remains in Iran as opposed to going back to the United States.

Betty is totally opposed to this as she feels that the current state of the country was not good for the family. For this reason she wants to go back to the U.S. Moody on the other hand is determined not to let this happen. There is a tussle over this issue for some time and subsequently Moody becomes violent and abusive and actually takes advantage of the laws that were there at that time by battering his wife. Betty has no other way out of the situation since if she chooses to divorce her husband he is the one who will get the custody of their daughter.

She chooses to flee to Turkey from where they go back to America. The movie depicts some of the atrocities that are committed against women just because the law that is there is not enough to protect them. This leaves these women in a situation where they have to take drastic actions that may even be detrimental to themselves. For example the act of Betty running away.
