Modelling of optical parameters for optimum collection of concentrated solar radiation for photovoltaic devices

Much has been utilized from our important ecosystems such as the forests, fisheries, wetland, fresh water resources, and that we have to move fast and change our course of actions to save the environment and the planet as a whole. The world’s program of action has not improved these past decades because we still depend on fossil fuel; specifically eighty per cent of energy comes from fossil fuels. The threat posed by climate change and global warming is pushing mother Earth to its near end. Industrialisation, consumerism in America and globalisation, among other drivers of change, have pushed and motivated scientists to find ways to address environmental problems which have continued to plague humanity. Constructions of buildings, new inventions and new technologies, have become a race for supremacy among big international organisations. Environmental problems of the world today have been worsened by technology. But we can use technology to save the environment. Fossil fuels and coal can be depleted. There will come a time that we’ll lack resources for these forms of energy source. In other words, there must be a way to produce a substitute for fossil fuels and coal, something that is not harmful to the ozone layers and the environment as a whole. Solar energy and other forms of environmentally friendly energy using the wind, the tidal waves, hydro, and other similar forms, must be tapped. The DESERTEC website says that a few hours the earth receives power from the sun is equivalent to a year it can use for its requirements to run factories, industries, businesses, homes, and offices. The deserts of Africa and Arabia can absorb much heat from the sun using mirrors to heat water to produce steam and convert this into energy. With this technology, solar energy is convertible into High Voltage DC current; the technology uses AC current converted into Direct Current using gargantuan transformers and components that store electric currents like capacitors. (Desertec Foundation, 2009) This paper aims to provide studies and research on solar radiation and how to ‘catch’ the rays of the sun to provide electricity. With this, we focus on what seems to be an emerging, but is quite becoming popular, technology – photovoltaic concentrator ...Show more

Solar Energy Power (Photovoltaic Systems)
From this research it is clear that there are now more than 100,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) system installations in the United Kingdom (UK) and with the FIT, this number is bound to increase. In lieu of this trend, the next part of this paper provides an overview of PV systems to assist anyone who wish to utilize this technology.

Theoretical review in optical materials used in Concentrating Photovoltanic (CPV) Technology
Theoretical Review of Optical Materials used in Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) Technology. Solar cells produce electrical current in direct proportion to the amount of solar radiation falling on them. By increasing the intensity of solar radiation, it is possible to significantly increase the efficiency of electricity production by these cells.

Investigation and previous work on optical and thermal measurements in transparent materials
Therefore, this chapter details previous studies on the optical and thermal analysis of optical materials. The basics of ray tracing, optical features and thermal analysis are described first, followed by a discussion on previous investigations on optical, thermal and physical properties of glasses and polymeric materials such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).

Physical properties of transparent optical polymers
This is because they are lighter, have higher workability, better impact resistance, and can be easily colored. The physical properties of glass are compared in figure 5.1. Fig. 5.1: Comparison of physical properties of glass and plastics (Weber, 2003). Commonly used optical polymers apart from PMMA and PC include polystyrene (styrene) (PS), polymethylpentene (TPX), polyetherimide (PEI), stryrene acrylonitrile (SAN), acrylic/styrene copolymer, methyl methacrylate styrene copolymer (NAS), polysulfone, allyl diglycol carbonate (CR-39) (ADC), Telfon (Telfon AF® ) (TPFE), acrylonitrile, butadienne, and styrene terpolymer (ABS), amorphous polyamide, and fluorinated-(ethylenic-cyclo oxyaliphatic

Solar thermal heating systems for domestic use in the uk
There are many new types of solar power which make it more efficient than ever. Solar energy harnessing is most effective in areas with long hours of sunlight which are fairly regular throughout the year. The aim of this research was to discover whether this technology can be applied in the United Kingdom despite the high latitude and persistent cloud cover and many times during the year.
