U.S and Mexico Border Insert Insert Part 1. overview It was not clear from the start of a new topic which was about U.S and Mexico. I have had an understanding of the border course to a higher level now. Throughout the lesson, I understood the topic and has helped me to understand the different aspects about U.S and Mexico. The border issues were mainly discussed throughout the lessons and helped me to analyze and perfect describe the crime rates, drug use and gender trafficking between the two nations. The study session exposed me to many painful moments the participants in “The Way North”, and had an impact in my life. The area that is interesting is when Antonio H. Hernandez, 41 says that “If you go to the hospital sometimes they won’t take care of you.” The message in the statement above sunk deep into my heart and sadness came to me. The participant’s events here are negative to note and not to be done to fellow humans in the modern society. The same events took palace at ABC where illegal immigrants roamed through hospitals without help because they are illegal. My individual stand is that I would offer my services to anybody who needs them regardless of their religion or region of origin. The message here is the satisfaction of the services delivered and that health comes at a cost. It is saddening to listen and understand the trouble they go through in wanting to cross the border. In the “No Place like Home” text, they cross the border at night, cross the borders without food, and they face harsh treatment from the border officers. The topic helped me to understand the traditional and world views about illegality. From the two sources above, it is evident that the U.S government does not allow illegal immigrants while the conditions of the illegal immigrants need their support. The cultural setup of the Mexican people is affected by the use of drugs. They import the bad character to the U.S through the border that does not go well with the state. They leave Mexico because of poverty in search for better lives. Study from the “Border People” reveal much about the border issues between the two countries over the decades. Historically, Britain, France, and Spain are the key players in the Mexico U.S border issue as evident from 1700-1763. The countries contributed to the independence of Mexico in the year 1821. Mexico has been the leading exporter of illegal immigrants to the U.S. Culture and historical events are the topics of concern and analyses the region and its people. In addition, it goes deeper to explain on the formation and protection of the border, and the how it affects the people around the borders; U.S and Mexico. It evaluates the activities of the people living their by analyzing their business and labor related activities and especially how they help to change the culture. The text analyses the languages, gender disparities and the aspects of immigration. NAFTA trade agreement in the year 1994 helped shape trade between the two countries. It has shaped the economic states by allowing free trade. The cultural and regional sub-themes in the text are interrelated with the world issues. I was made to understand about culture by studying the trading, the immigration, and management behaviors at the border. The source “Borders in Everyday Life,” explains with a deeper understanding the border issues. I am now in a position to better understand security at borders and airports which are a critical contributor to answering the border question. Despite availability of security measures, participants still sneak into the US. 2. Citizenship I am an obedient student and I like to engage my fellow students in forums relating to border analysis. The discussions have helped me develop listening and comprehension skills. It is with curiosity that we discuss the issues in relation to border and more so what we understand. My respect of persons and their opinions have improved positively and I am a better listener now. 3. Professionalism During the study, I have observed my change in professionalism conduct. I am now a better professional in handling issues. I have noted a change in class attendance and being in class with the right material always. Of importance is my time management which has had a positive improvement whereby I submit my assignment early. Part 2 Question; how do the stories of migrants and workers that you read in Chapter 6 (Manuel Padilla, Teresa Villanueva, Solid Fuente) challenge your expectations or surprise you? I am surprised by many things about the events that take place in chapter 6. Among the stories, one particularly got my attention; the story told by Manuel Padilla. The story is about an immigrant who lived during the Bracero program time between US and Mexico and preferred to go to the states without processing legality documents. He never did so because the time required to get such documents was longer than necessary. The positive angle of the story is the hard work the character performed his duties without fail. Question; How important is gender to their experiences and in what ways? The document narrates the ease in which men can cross the border compared to women. The reason being the safety issues men have when they decide to cross the border. There are courageous men who take their entire families and protect them to cross the border. Women fear sexual harassment and the fear of insecurity. Question; In Chapter 7, Leonel Castillo says, "You cant sympathize with the person being apprehended [crossing the border] or the one doing the apprehending until youre there" (p.199). What does he mean by this? What reasons can you find to sympathize with the person being apprehended? How about the one doing the apprehending? Explanation by Lionel Castillo that administration goes through hard times in trying to apprehend people, made me understand the depth of the border issue. Mexicans cross the border fro better lives. The view that theyre genuine and do not want to harm any human being, make the decision harder fro the officers. In addition, the family they left behind needs their support and provision. Any action against these persons is against any human sense. Question; would you be willing to call any of the people interviewed for Chapter 7 a “hero"? Who, and why? Leonel Castillo is my hero because of his bravery. He delivers a service that meets international and humanity standards in the office of the Commissioner of US immigration and Neutralization. Many detained illegal Mexican immigrants need to thank him because his sense of humanity in service and taking action is an example that can be copied. It is a call to responsibility from the nation and the human race. The office bearer need to know that Mexicans are entitled to legality in the US border. Question; based on the testimonies in Chapters 7 and 8, plus those of our guest speakers, what does it mean to be "Chicano"? Expressing the Nationality of Chicano is not simple because he is born in Mexico but lives in the US. Question; Does it seem to you, from the evidence in these oral histories, that there is more or less racial tension on the Border than in other parts of the country? The tensions evident at border crossing are racial. The towns that are located around the border are segregated and distinct. The inhabitants seem to know what goes on in the border. The officials who have been given the task to look after border crossing, do nothing to accept the genuine issues because all they care about is the color of the person who wants to enter the border. It is wrong to treat others wrongly knowing that we are one and the same; the best we can do for each other is good service. Read More
