Role of Electoral Systems in Re-constructing Conflicts in Guyana - Research Paper Example

Guyana is a non-island Caribbean country among the few countries that are not islands. It is located on the Northern Coast of South America and is an independent nation. Independents and minor parties improve and also diminish the quality of representative democracy in many countries including South America.The political environment in Guyana is characterized by ideologies, behaviors, and practices, and factors that affect politics such as the social-cultural aspects. Ethnicity and racial discrimination make the most of the politics among citizens who are influenced by the political figures.

Although much has been written on the racial and ethnic conflict in Guyana politics, less has been illustrated on how an appropriate electoral system would solve the problem. The Caribbean region and Guyana to be specific is significant and relevant since it has long been known to face ethnic and racial conflicts.Hypothesis 0: Electoral systems will solve the racial and ethnic conflict faced by Guyana society. This starts with the acceptability of the systems by societies and their applicability in the existing electoral systems of the society.

Hypothesis 1: Electoral systems cannot serve as a solution in the re-construction of Guyana's racial and ethnic conflict which is influenced by its political environment.Hypothesis 2: Electoral systems are likely to provide a solution to the problem of racism and ethnicity in Guyana, however, there are still doubts on the same.The study seeks to answer the question of the existence of race and ethnicity and if these aspects are causing division in the society which reflects in its political environment.

The study also answers the societal question concerning how an electoral system will impact ethnic conflict. This involves the kind of electoral system that is most appropriate in such a society as Guyana. Another research question being answered by the study concerns the existence of democracy in Guyana societies. There is a need to identify whether or not democracy exists in Guyana.The main issue of discussion under the review of the study is the ethnic and racial conflict in Guyana. Guyana has a history of political tension as a result of racial discrimination among the afro-Guyanese and the Indo-Guyanese.
