?The Chief Event Organizer South Yorkshire Air Museum UK Dear Sir/ Madam, REF: Request for a Stop of paranormal Events. I am writing to request that you stop staging paranormal events like the UK Shadow Seeker Investigation, which you are about to stage. I am aware that you are among the leading paranormal events venues in the world and that you stage several such events annually. Thus, this is a suggestion that you modify your policy of staging such events. Although such events are regarded as part of entertainment in the current society, especially among the young generation, they are somehow controversial and can bring undesired consequences and memories to those who attend the event. I cannot refuse to recognize the important part entertainment plays in our current way of living. It actually helps in reducing stress caused by various aspects of life and therefore that is why I do not recommend that you totally stop staging entertainment events. Consider using other modes of entertainment that are more educative while avoiding negative effects to the viewers. As Lord (2009) explains, a paranormal event is an event that seems to conflict with our understanding of the present world and the way it operates. These events are categorized into those, which are experienced through normal behavior, and those experienced through other ways. Examples of such events include the issue of ghosts, the issue of miracles, the issue of life after death, the influence of spirits and so on (Jinks, 2011). Paranormal events have been staged in the UK from the 19th century, majority trying to explain extra-ordinary manifestations like the issue of life after death and the issue of spirits. During this early time, formal organization was found in London to examine the events associated with spirits (Jink, 2011). Since then, several perceptions have developed towards them moreover; even some of these events are now scientifically explicable. Despite all these years, there is a lot which is still not understandable. Hope is not yet lost since majority of researchers believe that as time goes by, more and more of such events will become explainable. Paranormal events are believed to result to paranormal believe which later leads to paranormal illusions (Jinks, 2011). These beliefs and illusions are believed to have contributed to the disorder, which is shown in our society. In some cases, it can affect the society positively like a case where people may straighten their moral in fear of the dead and where it increases imaginative abilities. In most cases, such events affect the society negatively and thus they should not be staged at all. There are two kinds of people: the mysterious and miraculous type and the extreme psychological type. The mysterious and miraculous type believes fully the mysterious and miraculous things they see without thinking whether they can be true of false. On the other hand, there is the extreme psychological type. This kind of people believes on the explanatory power of science and will always regard the issue of spirits as pure fiction. Luckily, as public we live somewhere in the middle where closeness to either extreme differs from one person to another. According to Coon and Mitterer (2008) when you give the brain some sensory information it selects, organizes and integrates it to construct a picture or model of the real world. When people view such a paranormal event, they might view the world from a perspective that might affect them negatively. One might think that because a certain thing happened in such an event, it can also happen in the real world. This is actually very wrong. In addition, what people see is believed to play a great deal in building up a habit or a behavior. Thus if the way such paranormal events are staged is not changed we might get a generation which will be very different from the one we anticipate. In the current society, most people believe in religion. Some believe in Christianity, others Muslim and others in other religions. Most people as Christians and Muslims believe that God can only cause anything that is scientifically in explainable (Ellens, 2008). The events like the ones you stage contradict their faith and in most cases, they feel that what you are doing is not right. If you continue to stage such events, you are most likely to alter their ways of thinking as well affect their spiritual believes. In the same line with spirituality, the spirits that is shown in most of your events, brings fear among the living. This is evident through children who develop psychological problems after watching the events. Most of them might starts to fear darkness and might become afraid of sleeping alone or even walking alone. This can also happen with adults and in such cases; it calls for medical or psychiatrics’ attention. Believing in spirits, which can result from attending your paranormal event, can result to people becoming gullible. They might begin having a tendency to believe everything they are told without trying to think out whether it is true or false. This effect can help other people to take advantage of them and exploit them. Since the events you stage involves the issue of spirits, your viewers are most likely to become more and more gullible. To worsen the matter there is a likelihood of this gullibility being transferred from one generation to another. Another thing that can result from the issue of spirits you stage is skepticism. Those who attend your events are likely to develop a tendency of not accepting anything they do not understand and regarding it as pure fiction. This will affect the way they relate to one another and make them to develop a negative attitude towards all believes. This will affect the harmonious living and the peaceful co-existence that is currently experienced. Also staging such event will hinder development. People invent new things to solve the problems they have and to better their lives. Staging such events will make those who attend to have a strong believe in existence of supernatural powers and their ability to control what is happening in the world. This will make them reluctant in trying to improve their ways of living and as a result, it will negatively affect technology and thus hinder development. Since your target audience is the public irrespective of age, staging such event will negatively affect the future generation. I cannot dispute the fact that as per now, not all real life events are scientifically explicable and the issue of spirits might be true. As researchers have intensified their research in different areas, we find that some of the events that were paranormal in the past are now normal and understandable. A good example of such a case is the issue of diseases that had spiritual attachments in the past. Most of those diseases are currently related with poor eating habits, parasites, either environmental conditions or sexual immorality. Who knows whether with the rate in which science is developing, what we now regarding as paranormal in the near future will be scientifically explicable. I realized that your target audience is not only people who live in the UK but also those who live in other parts of the world. This is shown by the way you stage your events and how advertise them. As we know people in some other parts of the world like Africa and Asia have a very strong believe in the existence of spirits. Some of their culture requires that spirits should not be disturbed. The events you stage violate this belief and thus they feel that you interfere with their ways of living. The event you are about to organize involves a paranormal phenomenon. Current understanding of the world conflicts with the issue of the existence of the spirits. As a result, many people take it as superstitious and imaginative. These events are actually paranormal events because they stage what cannot be proved to exist. There are also some other paranormal events that you have staged of late like Open Cockpit Day, 999 Open Day, SAMA 82 Camping Weekend, HLF Heritage open day, Jeep and Cheerful and so on. I propose you stop due to various bad effects it has to the public. Before you stage any kind of event, you should consider the motives of the event, the emotions it will raise, and the perception of the public towards it (Coon & Mitterer, 2008). In most cases the motive of staging this event is entertainment, which is not, bad but the emotions it raises need not be forgotten. One can see tears building up on people’s eyes and some trying to cover their faces while watching such an event. It can also lead to a change in the way people behave. Although the perception of people towards them is not bad, the consequences they bring are not desirable. As you can see from the arguments I have given and many others, you actually need to stop staging paranormal events like the UK Shadow Seekers Investigation in the future. Please consider this change of policy for the sake of our future generation. You are not alone in organizing such events. Like Kelvedon Hatch, Regent Cinema, Bran Castle, Ruthin Gaol, Clitheroe Castle Museum and others, you make such events available to the public. I know it is not a bad line of business since it can bring a lot of income and has little competition but it negatively affects the public. All of you should stop staging such events and look for better events to stage. I know this might involve a change of policies, but it is necessary if we want to have a better world.
