Recent trends in education saw the value of student talk or student-led discussion over teacher talk or teacher-led discussion. From teacher-centred instruction, educators realized the important role of the learners in the learning process. This consequently resulted in the promotion of student-centred instruction where learners perform more active roles than the teacher. However, recent studies (Ling Shi 1998; Gambrell 2004) claim the importance of striking a balance between teacher talk and student talk, hence renewing the argument between the teacher and the student in classroom discussion.

This curriculum values the balance between the two types of instruction towards a wise and fruitful discussion. Therefore, lectures and teacher-led discussions will be conducted at the beginning, in which case the professor may assign topics in advance to allow students to research/study them. Also, active learning in various activities will promote multiple learning styles and lead students to reflect on the theories and concepts being emphasized.Students' response, creativity, and participation are necessary to achieve learning in an active learning environment.

In this situation, the learners take an active role in the activities and discussions that will transpire. The course is composed of nine main topics. These topics are theories of personality, and each is divided into four, namely, Concepts and Principles, Personality Development, Assessment Techniques, and Implications for Therapy. Based on this, the class will be divided into nine, and students will be assigned to research their topic and propose strategies for counselling/therapy based on the theory.

The group activity will rely on the creativity of students and their ability to work cooperatively. This way, the program emphasizes using an active learning environment to encourage students to share information, express feelings/ideas, and participate in group dynamics. Also, an active learning environment involves the commitment of students and the teacher to “a dynamic partnership in which both share a vision and responsibility for instruction” (Fern, Anstrom & Silcox, 1994).
