The Connection Between Mental Illness and Crime - Literature review Example

The correlation effect has been established by using a vignette illustrating the influence of mental conditions on the commission of crimes and criminal related events. Various research literature has been reviewed in this research in order to come up with a suitable stand to justify the existence of a connection between mental conditions and crime. The absoluteness of the association between mental illness and criminal offenses has been the subject of great debate for a long time.Controversial situations usually exist which tend to oppose the possible existence of a connection between mental illnesses and criminal offenses.

Some people have been noted to be violent even when they exhibit no evidence for mental illness. Other people, on the other hand, have indicated symptoms of mental inaccuracies without any indication of violence (Brame, Shawn, Raymond, & Robert, 2004). These conditions have attracted serious criticisms and invited a lot of research activities in order to establish the true position of the matter. Many researchers such as Brame, Shawn, Raymond, & Robert, (2004) have tried to explain the observations described above.

Varied arrays of results have been found to connect violence in different persons and certain factors. Among the factors that have been found to determine the existence of violence in some persons is the genetic disposition in different persons. Brezina, (2000) however, notes that genetic factors defining violence may exist in a person without influencing their behaviors and reactions under certain circumstances. According to Brezina, (2000) observations, the genetic factors that define violence in persons may exist without causing significant influence on the persons concerned.

However, Bumpass & Hsien-Hen Lu, (2000) notes that environmental factors play a very great role in determining the level of violence a person exhibits. Environmental conditions define the cultural systems of society.
