Article Response Paper Relating to Lifespan Development Name Instructor’s name Institution of study Date Lifespan Psychology Lifespan Psychology is referred to as the scientific study of how individuals grow and also develop from childhood to death. It focuses on the growth and development in terms of social and emotional factors as well as how intelligence and personality develop. Its focus starts from the way children think and communicate in a social world; that is the process of how children develop. In essence, lifespan psychology as a field that examines the individual patterns of change, growth, and stability behavior that takes place throughout an individual’s life. Lifespan psychology has three major areas that form the basis of the study. These three major areas are the physical development, cognitive development, and personality and social development. We should note that lifespan psychology deals with individual development study from conception way into old age/death. Lifespan psychology has a core assumption which is that adulthood is not the end of development but that development extends across the entire life course. According to PB Baltes et al (1980) from conception onwards there are lifelong adaptive processes of acquisition, transformation, maintenance, and attrition in functions and psychological structures (PB Baltes, 1997). Lifespan psychology has an age and range and is therefore divided into the following age periods of study; Prenatal period Infancy Toddlerhood Middle childhood Adolescence Young childhood Middle adulthood Late adulthood Death/Dying Nursing According to Virginia Henderson (2004) nursing is said to be primarily the assisting of an individual in their performance of the activities that contribute to health or to their recovery to proper health such that they would perform unaided. This would be so if they had necessary strength, knowledge, or the will (Siviter 2004). The Royal College of Nursing defined nursing as the use of a clinical judgment in efforts to providing care that would enable people to improve, cope with health problems, or recover health. This will make the individuals cope with the problem of health and be able to achieve the possible quality health despite their health issue or disability until the time they leave life or till death. On the other hand, there is psychology which is the scientific study of behavior as well, as the mental processes (Ciccarelli & Meyer 2006). It is through the use of psychology that the understanding of how people think, behave and feel in groups as well as individually in all the areas of life is done; including health. Relationship between the article and Lifespan Psychology Considering that the article brings together players or stakeholders of lifespan psychology among them families and the caregivers who in this case are the nurses, it has a significance contribution and relationship with lifespan psychology. In the pace university’s Lienhard school of nursing joining forces with the First Lady and Jill Biden, it means that they will be contributing significantly to the lifespan development of a given population which in this situation is the veterans as well as the military families. Since the article talks about nurses being educated to be able to attend to the unique health needs that the members in service, the veterans, as well as those of their families, it only means that their lifespan development will be catered for/ taken care of and they will see them develop in the desired way. The training will see the psychological needs of these people attended to, the behavior change taking into account the trauma that covers various families whose spouses or families members go out for peace keeping or even to the battle fields. On the other hand, the fact that the needs of the service members, the veterans and their families will be taken care of, it means that their lifespan development needs will be taken care of. This relates to Lifespan psychology in the fact that on one hand the veterans at their stage of development will be taken care of by the educated nurses while on the other hand the service members as well as their families will be attended to by educated nurse. Lifespan psychology looks at all the issues that may affect healthy leaving for an individual all through life. For this reason, this article relates to all stages of lifespan development from the fact that it touches on the lives of individuals in their childhood through to old age. Effect on Family Development Considering the fact that nurses have the capacity to provide lifesaving care to communities with their reach, the importance of the veterans as well as service men receiving care is paramount and will have overreaching significance to their lifespan development. To start with, families of will be in the forefront among the beneficiaries of this noble gesture for the nurses. It is important to note that many of the veterans, the Service Men and also the families go through hell in trying to cope with the occurrences of war. When the men and women go to war, much is reported about them and their families those they leave behind as they go to war are just as them who went to war or even worse. As a result the families are victims of traumatic stress while the service men as well as the veterans become victims of post-traumatic stress disorders, they face traumatic brain injuries, depression, and worse even they face combat related disorders. For these issues and disorders, the lifespan and development for the subjects is at stake and it would not happen naturally or as it is supposed to be. For this reason, care given to the families for their cognitive development, biological development, and also on their physical development will turn the situation better for all these areas of lifespan development will have been taken care of by the professionals in the field. They will help the families overcome the traumas not forgetting the help that the veterans need in overcoming the post combat traumas that they experience. With the education for the nurses in efforts to enabling them to give care to the Service men, Veterans, and their families life will really change for the better for the care takers. They will be able to live normal livelihoods despite their shortcomings. The people from post war as well as their families need psychological help on their various spheres of their lives. This is the reason why this education to the nurses which is aimed at recognizing and being better care givers for the veterans, service men, and their families will have great impacts on the lives of all these people. Implications This Education to nurses will help in providing the nurses with an easy reference to life-span development concepts that they will encounter in their practice of nursing thereby giving effective care to their patients for the better of healthy living. On the other hand, the nurses will have critical thinking as well as cognitive abilities of processing and careful reading and communicating the various reasons for disturbances that are experienced by the underlined patients; veterans, service men and their families in their developmental process. This will also help them have an understanding of the various human behavior aspects on how each person develop and changes in their lifespan and thereby being able to have the veterans, service men, and their families live in accordance to the changes and development expected for them. To the people who will be receiving the care, i.e. the service men, veterans, and their families. Life will gain shape and meaning. This is because the various problems that they may experience as a result of being out in the battle field, being a spouse to a service man/woman, or physiological issues at old age will be given professional care that will see everyone at whatever stage of development they will be in live a healthy and desired life. So as the nurses benefit with the education, the men and women of the cloth as well as their families will too have something to smile about since they will have care givers for better and a healthy living.
