Interview Project Research Questions a. Why did you have to carry out abortion? This question addresses the reasonsas to why women and girls abort their unborn babies before they are born. a. Was the abortion process successful? b. Who helped you in aborting the fetus? c. Who introduced you to the person? d. Why did you have to abort? e. Do you know of some other girls of your age who have aborted? f. Did your parents know that you were going to abort? g. Did they know that you were pregnant? h. Who impregnated you? i. Where is he? j. Did he help you in finding a place to abort? These follow up questions will help in finding out why women and other teenage girls abort. In the process of aborting, some girls may lose their live. It is therefore important to as tem if the process of carrying out abortion is harmful or can cause dangers to the body. Further, most women do not seek the assistance of doctors in carrying out abortion; they often chose to remain silent since they fear the legal implications of the process. It is therefore necessary to ask them where and who helped them in aborting the unborn baby. 2. Research Participant These research questions will be directed to Jane who is eighteen years old and has had to spend many months in a healthcare centre due to the health complications she developed while trying to carry out abortion. Jane was found to have bled excessively in the process. She was found unconscious. She had opted to seek the services of backstreet unqualified doctors to carry out abortion. Unqualified doctors often lure teenage girls to carry out abortion by giving them promises that they will offer better services (Dean, Ducey and Malik 8). Teenage pregnancy is one of the major challenges facing girls today. Pregnant teenage girls often feel guilty of their actions. They engage in unprotected sex which the leads to pregnancy. Fear and guilt often prevent them from sharing their situations with the parents and other members of the society. They, therefore, seek for the cheapest and the presumably most effective way to terminate the pregnancy without involving their parents. The most effective way to them is to carry out abortion from unqualified medical practitioners. Jane is a perfect example of the sufferings teenage girls go through when they decide to seek abortion from unqualified doctors. Jane is lucky to have her life back, however most teenage girls lose their lives due to unsafe abortion practices in the society. Jane developed health complications, one such complication according to her is fistula, and she also says that she lost her ability to give birth again. Analysis of the Interview Why did you have to abort? “I feared what my parents would tell me. They have been very supportive and caring and I did not want to disappoint them by disclosing my situation. I therefore chose to look for a solution that would not be known by the parents” she also said that she feared her relation and stigma from her friends. They would see her as an immoral girl. Was the abortion process successful? “The process was so painful. I fainted, bled and later found myself lying in a hospital bed” the person who helped her carry out abortion had given her some drugs to swallow, drugs she was told would reduce the pain. Who helped you in aborting the fetus? “The person was operating a small pharmacy in our neighborhood. I was told by my friend that he would help me in aborting the unborn baby, so due to desperation, I had to seek his services” Who introduced you to the person? “My friend” Jane says that her friend told her of other girls who had sought the services of the man and were successful. Her friend therefore told and directed her to the person. Do you know of some other girls of your age who have aborted? “No, I don’t know. It is my friend who informed me of some girls who had sought the services of the doctor.” Did your parents know that you were going to abort? “I would not tell them, I was so afraid. I thought they would see me as a disgrace to them. In addition, they had so much faith in me, and often saw mew as a role model to y other younger siblings.” Did they know that you were pregnant? “No, they did not know until I was admitted to the hospital” she further asserts that her parents were so furious with the doctor as well as with the boy who had impregnated her. They tried to look for the doctor but it was reported that he had crossed over the border to neighboring country. Efforts by the police to arrest the man has not yet been successful. To the boy who impregnated me, there was nothing that could be done to him. The way was one year younger than me and he did not rape me, we were in a relationship. Who impregnated you? “A teenage boy just like me” Jane says that her boyfriend was also too frightened by the pregnancy and did not know what to do. He feared both for his parents and mine. Where is he? “He is in school” Hid he help you in finding a place to abort? “No, he had no idea of what to do” Teenage pregnancy is a major challenge to school going girls. Parents should be aware of the nature of the problem, they should constantly provide information to their daughters and sons on the correct forms of behavior expected of them while interacting with each other. Teenage pregnancy leads to health complications as well as other social challenges such as stigma from friends (Dean, Ducey and Malik 8). Conclusion The findings to this interview responded well to my interview questions. They were able to address the reasons why teenagers decide to engage in unsafe abortion. In addition, they were able to outline the magnitude of the problem. Teenage pregnancy causes and problems have been addressed. Sexual relations among teenagers are a major contributor to teenage pregnancies.
