? Child Development July 11, The article Behavioral Competence and Academic Functioning among Early Elementary Children with Externalizing Problem focuses on child development. The article delves on the favorable effects of competent behavior on the child’s school functions may overwhelm the unfavorable effects of developing child’s externalizing problems. The research on students from the kindergarten to grade three levels indicate the children’s behavioral competence made a significant contribution to the child’s school performances, specifically in resolving school problems, reading, and writing achievement. The research shows that professionals must focus on identifying and promoting behavioral competencies when focusing on children beset with negative behavior issues. INTRODUCTION. The article centers on child development research (Kyon, Kim, Sheridan, 2012). The research delves on the child’s behavioral competence and externalizing problems. The research delves on the developing child’s academic performances. The child’s behavioral competence and externalizing problems affect the child’s academic test performances. METHODS. The research focused on observing 207 children. The children belonged to the Kindergarten to Grade 3 levels. The respondents were chosen from 82 classrooms and 21 public and parochial schools located in an average Midwestern city and its surrounding communities. The researchers gathered data from the chosen students’ teachers. The children and teachers answered a questionnaire, the basis for the findings. RESULTS. The results of the research were generated. The findings indicate children with higher levels of adaptation prowess showed lower percentages of academic problems. Further, the findings indicate that the European American boys had higher levels of academic problems than girls as well as children coming from other minority groups. Next, the findings indicate academic problems are related to the students’ adaptive skills. Likewise, the findings indicate the child’s disability contributes to reading problems. In addition, the parents’ academic level significantly influenced the children’s academic performances. The findings also indicate that children with disability generated lower math test scores. The child’s adaptive skills greatly influenced the child’s math achievement performances. DISCUSSION. The research findings indicate the child’s behavioral competence as a stronger influence on the child’s academic scores than the child’s externalizing problems. The findings prove that the child’s behavioral competence plays a very significant role in the child’s academic performances. The findings clearly show that the child’s externalizing issues do not have a significant effect on the child’s school performances. However, the research findings show that children’s externalizing problems influenced the child’s reading comprehension skills, without affecting the math and reading test outcomes. The children’s behavioral competence reduced the effects of the parents’ low academic attainment. Children with parents having college degrees showed better academic performances than children with parents having only a high school or elementary diploma. Likewise, the behavioral competence of the children enhanced the student- teacher class discussion. Summary. In terms of study, the purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between the child’s behavioral competence and externalizing problems with the child’s academic test performances. The study will resolve the issue whether the favorable effects of competent behavior on the child’s school functions can overwhelm the unfavorable effects of developing child’s externalizing problems. Further, the hypothesis statement states that the behavioral competence is not related to the children’s academic problems. The hypothesis statement shows that the child’s behavioral competence would positively influence the child’s reading and math academic test scores. In addition, the research focused on the respondents filling up of questionnaires. The children were asked to indicate their parents’ highest educational attainment. The research included getting the chosen children’s academic scores from their respective teachers. The research delved in the effect of the parents’ highest educational attainment on the child’s academic performances. The research delves into the relationship between the child’s behavioral competence and academic test scores. The research focuses on the child’s externalizing problems and academic performances. In terms of participants, the participants were children. The children belonged to the kindergarten to grade school levels. The child participants were chosen from several schools located in the United States. The children were made to fill out some questionnaire. The article can be used to treat children with low academic scores. The article will serve as basis for other researchers. Furthermore, the authors achieved their purpose. The article contains convincing data. The findings affirm the article’s hypothesis. The readers will e easily persuaded to accept the authors’ concepts. Lastly, the article was well written and comprehensible. The article is broken down into sections or topics. Each section contains power packed statistical data. The findings, discussion, and other section contain comprehensible child development learning concepts. CONCLUSION. Summarizing the above discussion, the research veers on child development’s academic status. The article delves on the relationship between the child’s academic performances and externalizing issues. The article delves on the effect of the child’s behavioral capacity and school test output.
