? Personal Career Development Profile A. Individual Profile Relevant Work and Educational History Michael McDonald is currently engaged in construction profession as a drywaller in Orange County. Mr. McDonald as a drywaller professional is entrusted with the task of installing wallboard in wall for better framing of the wall surface. Drywaller task is to prepare wall for painting as well as wallpapering among others. Mr. McDonald is qualified as a concrete worker and drywaller on a fulltime basis. Moreover, Mr. McDonald has acquired valuable professional experience as a concrete worker from the City of Riverside on a temporary position. Mr. McDonald is qualified with ‘General Education Development’ (GED) on educational background. GED is usually a test assisting adults who have failed to pursue high school diploma. Mr. McDonald with the assistance of GED will be able to explore opportunities of having a better salaried career and future development (GED Testing Service, 2013). Relevant Career Skills, Values, Attributes, Traits Mr. McDonald who has pursued GED education is hard working and motivated towards developing a career as a concrete worker in future from his current profession as a drywaller. It is identified that Mr. McDonald is quite weak in English and mathematics skills due to his disability in learning and reading. Irrespective of his weakness in English and mathematics skills, he passed out in these subjects with good marks proving his steadfastness. Moreover, Mr. McDonald was arrested twice for driving vehicle while he was intoxicated. As a young individual, Mr. McDonald is enthusiastic as well as committed towards attaining a better career opportunity. Mr. McDonald dedication, motivation and hardworking skills have made him to opt for job or career opportunity in construction profession as a concrete worker. On the basis of assessment related to ‘Comprehensive Occupational Preference Systems (COPS)’ results portrayed that Mr. McDonald possess adequate knowledge in activities including fine motor skills which do not require reading ability. These are the various factors which are responsible for adopting career as a concrete worker and drywaller in construction field. Key Milestones in Their Career Development Mr. McDonald has adopted a career as a concrete worker and drywaller due to his hardworking capabilities and physical fitness. Moreover, Mr. McDonald has taken on this profession due to his disability in learning and reading problem. Nevertheless, Mr. McDonald pursued as well as completed education in GED which assisted in obtaining a better career and future growth. Career Role Models/Mentors and/or Other Influences on the Present Career Development of the Individual It has been observed that in the life of Mr. McDonald, there are many individuals who have played a significant role in his life for better future growth as well as development. More importantly, his father has always been a relevant personality particularly in terms of decision related to his career development. Mr. McDonald’s father has advised and supported him to go for ‘Department of Rehabilitation’ services with the intention of pursuing a career as a concrete worker in the City of Riverside construction site. The ‘Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor’ and his father have assisted Mr. McDonald in obtaining future growth as well as services along with vocational goal. Short and Long-Term Goals Short-term goal of Mr. McDonald is to develop a career in driving as a truck driver. But this career aim of Mr. McDonald is in vain due to his arrests in two incidents of driving while intoxicated. An official of ‘Department of Motor Vehicles’ (DMV) has firmly stated that accident cases leading to arrest will affect his career adversely in this particular profession. This aspect has disappointed him immensely. On the other hand, the long term career aim or objective of Mr. McDonald is to be a concrete worker on a permanent basis in construction sites for better career growth and salary. B. Assessment The career development plan of Mr. McDonald are examined on the basis of two assessment procedures out of which one is online method and the other is to be interview assessment method. In interview method, a vocational assessment has been conducted with the objective of developing a better career plan for Mr. McDonald. On the basis of this assessment various strengths as well as weaknesses of Mr. McDonald are recognized. Interviews have been undertaken with the objective of determining the various services which are offered in order to assist Mr. McDonald to develop a better career. In the assessment program two prominent assessment tools have been carried out which include ‘Comprehensive Occupational Preference System (COPS) and ‘Career Ability Placement Survey’ (CAPS) with the aim of determining the appropriate career options and growth opportunities. On the basis of COPS, it has been identified that Mr. McDonald has interest in fourteen occupational areas which is strictly grounded on his level of interest. The result of this test revealed that Mr. McDonald scored above 25 percentile in twelve occupational areas and in the rest two he scored 75 percentile respectively. It is also recognized that Mr. McDonald has faced intense problem in reading which was evident from the considerable time that he took to complete the test. . On the other hand, the result of CAPS test has been conducted with the intention of identifying the skills or abilities of Mr. McDonald in eight areas. The outcomes of the CAPS test are as follows: Manual Speed and Dexterity (Fine Motor Skills) The result of ‘Manual Speed and Dexterity’ indicated that Mr. McDonald scored the highest in the 5th stanine level. Notably, Mr. McDonald scored 5out of 9 which signify that he possess ‘Average’ skill in ‘Fine Motor skill’. This test was not based on reading. Perceptual Speed and Accuracy and Spatial Reasoning The outcome in this segment stated that Mr. McDonald scored in the 3rd stanine level which implies a ‘Below Average’ level of skill. Also, for this assessment no reading was required. Mechanical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning (Logic), Numerical Accuracy (Math), Word Knowledge (Vocabulary) and Language Usage (Grammar) In this assessment, Mr. McDonald scored in the 1st stanine which revealed a ‘Very Low’ level of skill. In accordance to this assessment, it is ascertained that Mr. McDonald possesses inabilities in reading skill. Moreover, his English as well as Mathematics skills are also very poor. Based on these assessments four clusters of occupation have been selected according to his ability, skill and scores obtained. The four occupational clusters include skilled services, outdoors, skilled technology and consumer economics. Mr. McDonald preference is to be a long distance driver but the incidents resulting to his arrest while driving in intoxicated state was the major factor which hampered this career aim. Moreover, the ‘Department of Rehabilitation’ also failed in assisting Mr. McDonald to have a career as Concrete worker in the City of Riverside. Concerning with the online assessment procedure an ‘External Situational Assessment’ is executed with the intention of providing career options and development plan. Exploration Outcome This test based on the interest of Mr. McDonald, revealed that he has a preference of opting career as a truck driver for long distance. Additionally, it is also identified that he wants to be a concrete worker in the City of Riverside. Mr. McDonald is currently working as a drywaller and it has been recognized he possesses major problem in reading which further has adverse effect on his skills in relation to English and Math. Nevertheless, Mr. McDonald is observed to be physically fit and capable of performing hard laborious works. He also possesses effective decisions making and problem solving skills. Mr. McDonald has received adequate support from his father related to future his career services options. It is also perceived that with the passage of time, Mr. McDonald‘s failure to accomplish his determined goals made him dejected and petulant. These are the various outcomes which are obtained from the above two assessments. Justification for Additional Assessment Needs/Options On the basis of the results of the aforementioned two assessments, various issues and appropriate career options are identified but Mr. McDonald was not offered with adequate counseling services. In this respect, other assessment should be carried out with the objective of offering better counseling services. Moreover, a ‘Qualitative Career Assessment’ should be adopted with the intention of offering better educational opportunities as well as training programs. It can be affirmed that with additional assessment approach, Mr. McDonald will be assisted with the opportunity of enhancing his skills for improved career options and future development. C. Application of Theory and Recommendation Summary It has been observed from the above discussions that Mr. McDonald is presently working as a drywaller. He is dedicated and enthusiastic in obtaining a better career options for future growth as well as development. However, he possesses reading disability which has ultimately affected his skills in English and Mathematics. The most preferable career option was to be a truck driver for long distance. Unfortunately, due to his arrest resulting from two accidents at the state of intoxicated driving has deterred him from accomplishing his career as truck driver. Currently, his major objective is to be a concrete worker on a permanent basis in the City of Riverside. In this context, career development theories signify the various traits as well as qualities which are acquired by employees that significantly assist them to choose their career options and future opportunities according to their strengths and weaknesses. The three career development theories are as follows: Holland Theory of Vocational Types This theory reveals that behavior style as well as personality of Mr. McDonald will be helpful in identifying better career options. Moreover, on the appropriateness of the career option, Mr. McDonald will be able to identify suitable career development plan for better future growth as well as development (Coach Cullen, 2013). Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory This theory suggests that self-efficacy is an important element in formulating a better career development plan. Mr. McDonald is seemed to be enthusiastic as well as motivated in acquiring a better career opportunity in accordance with his capabilities. He is physically fit and can execute hard laborious work effectively. Moreover, on the basis of assignment, it is identified that Mr. McDonald has a preference for career options which include truck driver and concrete worker and he is committed towards accomplishing these career objectives (Leung, 2008). Super’ Development Self-Concept Theory This theory implies that career plan should be formulated on the basis of self-concept. In this respect, it is observed that Mr. McDonald has planned his career in accordance with his self-concept. Mr. McDonald has problem in reading but he is physically fit and is capable of executing hard working tasks in an effective manner. Hence, Mr. McDonald is seeking career for self-satisfaction and according to his level of competencies (Leung, 2008). In this perspective, three recommendations are offered with the intention of assisting Mr. McDonald to accomplish his career objectives effectively. Training Programs Mr. McDonald should be offered with efficient training program with the intention of improving his skills and abilities to execute tasks in an effective fashion. Moreover, the training program will also assist him in obtaining better decision making and problem solving capabilities. Counseling Services Mr. McDonald should be offered with proficient counseling services so that he is capable of identifying appropriate career options which may aid him towards better growth as well as development in future. Educational Opportunity Mr. McDonald should be offered with better educational opportunity with the intention of assisting him to mitigate his reading problem to a certain extent.
