Steps in Writing a Grant Proposal for PEACE Domestic Violence Agency Executive Summary Educating the public on how to handle and protect themselves from becoming a victim of violence is the key behind reducing the number of sexual assault and domestic violence cases. In line with this, the goals and objectives of the proposed project aim to improve the quality of PEACE’s social services by expanding the available infrastructure, upgrading the existing training facilities, and improve the existing knowledge and skills of its professional trainers who will be assigned to handle trauma cases related to sexual assault and other forms of domestic violence. Part of the short-range objectives is to upgrade the existing training facilities of PEACE as well as improve the knowledge and skills of its professional trainers with regards to managing traumatic situations the victims and families of the victims are currently going through whereas the long-term objective is to expand the existing infrastructure of PEACE in order to support the increasing number of victims who will be needing the social support of the said organization. To improve the quality of PEACE’s social services, a budget of one million US dollars (US$1,000,000.00) is needed wherein one-eighth (1/8) of the total expected grant will be used to financially support the further education and trainings of its professional trainers and upgrade the existing training facilities such as the improvements in training area and the purchase of new computers, projectors, and LCDs. To provide assistance to the victims of violence, the mission of PEACE Domestic Violence Agency is to reduce victim trauma, empower survivors, and promote recovery to the victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Social problems related to domestic violence can be solved by increasing the number of available service provision, education, and social awareness. By extending free educational training services, wellness support group, and shelter to the victims of domestic violence, PEACE will not only be able to promote the well-being of young men, women, and children whose lives have been affected by domestic violence but also improve the quality of life of families whose member or members are in prison. Project Goals and Objectives Educating the public on how to handle and protect themselves from becoming a victim of violence is the key behind reducing the number of sexual assault and domestic violence cases. Therefore, the project goals and objectives aim to improve the quality of PEACE’s social services by expanding the available infrastructure and upgrading the existing training facilities. Likewise, it is also necessary to improve the existing knowledge and skills of its professional trainers who will be assigned to handle trauma cases related to sexual assault and other forms of domestic violence. Needs and Problem Statement Due to lack of funding, the currently available social service offered by PEACE is not competitive enough to extend social assistance to all the victims of domestic and sexual abuse. Because of the increasing trend in the number of domestic and youth violence, spousal and child abuse, assault, and incidents of road rage cases; the existing infrastructure of PEACE is not enough to entertain all victims of violence including their family members. Since 1980s, PEACE failed to invest on IT gadgets which are important in improving the quality of its training services. For this reason, there is a need to upgrade the available training facilities of PEACE. Furthermore, PEACE will need to shoulder additional expenses for further education or training programs in order to improve the existing knowledge of its professional trainers. Description of Proposed Project The proposed project will improve not only the quality of social services that PEACE will be extending to the victims and families of the victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in the city of Portland. However, the proposed project is limited in terms of extending social support to victims of domestic violence outside the city of Portland. The total budget for the proposed project is one million US dollars (US$1,000,000.00). With this amount, the management of PEACE will be spending one-eighth (1/8) of the total grant in financially supporting the further education and trainings of its professional trainers and the upgrading the existing training facilities. The remaining three-eighth (3/8) of the total grant will be used in expanding the existing infrastructure of PEACE. As part of evaluating the success of the proposed project, before and after quantitative and qualitative survey will be conducted to the social service participants of PEACE. In line with this, the randomly selected survey respondents will be questioned about the improvements in the quality of social services they have received before and after the proposed project has been implemented. Plan of Action, Methodology and Design The entire proposed project will last for the next five years. Upon receiving the proposed grant, the upgrading the existing training facilities which includes any further improvements in the training room(s) and purchasing of new computers, projectors and LCDs is expected to be completed within the next 6 to 9 months. The further education and trainings of its professional trainers will be pursued over the next two years. Further education includes attending seminars that are related to proper handling of trauma cases. Over the next five of years, the top management of PEACE will focus on planning and execution of plans for the expansion the existing infrastructure. The members of PEACE will be dealing with professional architects and engineers to determine whether or not there is a need to purchase another nearby piece of land or simply expanding the existing infrastructure by building additional one or two floors. The remaining three-eighth (3/8) of the total grant will be used in expanding the existing infrastructure of PEACE. With the one million US dollars (US$1,000,000.00) budget requirement, the following budget summary will be followed: (US$) Total Budget Requirement 1,000,000.00 Less: Further Education of Trainers 70,000.00 Improvements in Training Rooms 30,000.00 New Computers 15,000.00 Projectors 5,000.00 LCDs 5,000.00 (125,000.00) Expansion of Existing Infrastructure 875,000.00 (875,000.00) Balance: 0 Current and Pending Support PEACE is receiving two kinds of grant programs. First, the Small Grants Program which offers one-time grants of US$5,000 to registered charities with an annual budget of below US$500,000. With approximately US$150,000 each year for duration of 3 years, the Investor Program which is an innovative funding program that is created to support a total of six organizations related to the Supporting Families program. Evaluation The proposed project has been carefully evaluated before PEACE submitted the grant proposal. Three months before the grant proposal was written, the staff of PEACE conducted a one-on-one interview and survey study concerning the possible ways on how to improve the quality of PEACE’s social services that is currently being delivered to the victims and families of the victims of domestic violence. Based on the study results, the top management and staff of PEACE discussed the major concerns of social service participants. *** End *** References California State University. (2010).
