This memo aims to discuss the structure and functioning of organizations with the help of five different articles. The report will also provide a summary of these articles and will critically evaluate them. Summary: All the five articles that are discussed in this report are on organizational management and discuss the different forms of managers, leaders, the organization setting and network etc. In the first article which is ‘Managers and Leaders’ by Abraham Zaleznik talk about the role of managers and leaders in an organizational setting and how they differ or do not differ from each other.

What are their duties and tasks and how they can be more influential and how they can use power to become productive. Moreover, this article has also discussed the shortfalls of the use of power and its legitimacy. In another article which is ‘Scientific Management’ by Frederick W. Taylor has also talked about the organizational setting but from a theoretical point of view. The author has discussed three questions which has highlighted the significance of scientific management with that of the ordinary one and the differentiation both these management has.

Moreover, Taylor in his article has also talked about the principles and how leaders have an influence on the functioning of an organization. . Not only this, but it allows the organization to attain those goals with the limits and boundaries which are imposed. The second last article that has to be discussed in this report is ‘Network Forms of Organization’ which is written by Joel M. Podolny and Karen L. Page. The article deals with the network form of organization which says that organizations encourages learning, develop strategies to attain goals and objectives, it also contributes toward better economy, and facilitate the management and employees with sound and considerable sovereignty.

The last article which is ‘Exploration and Exploitation in Organizational Learning’ is written by James G. March. As per the name, the article talks about the exploration of new and advanced methods and opportunities in an organizational setting and the exploitation and efficient use of old possibilities. However, the article has also highlighted the anatomy between the two and the complications that may arise by the allocation of cost and benefit and time and space. Moreover, it also discusses the effects of ecological interactions.

The writer has taken help of two different situations / models in order to explain and demonstrate these fragments. Article # 01 Managers and Leaders; Are they Different? By Abraham Zaleznik. The articles has majorly emphasized on the role of leaders and managers. The time this article was written by Zaleznik was the period in which the conventional perspective of the management revolves around the structure and functions of the organization. Managers were encouraged to increase their competence through proper and efficient means, while they were told to balance control and power and its correct use.
