Though he gives an overview of what really happens in shaping an individual as he interacts with the rest, he fails to clear the air on gender interactions amongst men and amongst women or the inter-gender relationship, and how social roles are communicated from one generation to another. The originality and identity of a man cannot be eliminated from the biological formation of man and the theory of gene inheritance. Man has been known to convey certain character traits to the children and thus playing an important role in defining who an individual is.

Although his view that man's development of identity results in interaction with others is justifiable, it lacks the evidence of how this is inputted into a person and its influence on the original traits of that person. It is known that all individuals do not possess the ability to interact with others; some are shy, others are overconfident. Although Erving's work shows clearly the interaction between individuals, it can be perceived to have left out very important matters of the society like education, career, information systems, and technology in shaping an individual to fit into society.

In fact, these are gradually influencing relations between people. In the modern world where technology is founding a place even inside our bedrooms, society is becoming more and more diverse. Even the children are not getting enough time with their parents because they spend time exploring the website, playing games, watching movies, or even at school, and in turn, they may lack enough time to interact with people. In fact, cases of obesity in children have been linked to growth in technology and the behavior of children implicated with how much time they spent watching movies full of violent scenes and sexual content.

The behavior of people in the modern world is no longer the same as the entry of better education, improved informational systems, media, and technology. Sawhney (2000) notes that electronic media is destroying the identities of groups, social roles, and private and personal areas. Children aged eight to eighteen years spend about 44.5 hours/week in front of media gadgets like television, computers, and game screens than other activities in their life apart from the time spent to sleep.
