Children Who Speak a Language Other Than English at Home, by Region Children Who Speak a Language Other Than English at Home, by RegionThe American Community Survey collected the data. The survey collected data on children who speak a language other than English at home and by region in 2013. The data was collected in the U.S and in four major regions; the Northeast, Midwest, South and West. The survey collected the data to establish the penetration of English language in the U.S. Comparison was done with other spoken languages such as Spanish, Asian, Pacific as well as other Indo-European languages.

Data was collected from households in 2013 through a survey. Some of the questions asked include the age of the participant. In addition, fluency in English, Spanish, Pacific and other Indo-European languages was investigated by using the term “very well” to enable the researcher establish the fluency. Figure 1: Children with difficulty in Speaking EnglishSource: (U.S. Census Bureau & American Community Survey, 2013)Based on the data, a total of 2,443,000 children have difficulty in speaking English.

For a nation whose English is the official language, the number is quite big. The population of children having difficulties speaking English could be fluent in the other languages. To deal with the problem, it is proposed that the students are encouraged to speak English at home. It is further recommended that children are discouraged from speaking their native languages at school to improve their fluency in the English language.
