There are numerous reasons why the Chinese government should formulate government policies that are aimed at helping the aging population. First, China is a developing country that has achieved great economic achievement due to the devotion of the elderly to nation-building. They spent their energy supporting the nation and now that they have no energy to support themselves anymore, it is the responsibility of the government. Furthermore, the Chinese culture demands that the elderly be taken good care of and respected (Chi, 2008).

Moreover, the aging problem in China is a result of the 1980’s One-Child Policy of the government to limit the population of the country. As such, the family structure has been transformed gradually into a 4-2-1 structure where there are four grandparents, two parents, and a single child. This problem is worse for parents who lose their only child and end up with no one to take care of them during their old age (Peking Union Medical College Hospital, 2011).
