Personal ment: Application for the Master’s Program in Social Service at the Worden School of Social Service My interest in social work and service began at a very young age and has to day become my key motivation in life. Even as a young adult I was able to understand and comprehend all that was happening around me and in the world. In particular I became more aware of the vulnerable population especially the poverty stricken and the aged population and their needs. It dawned upon me that serving those who really need help and assistance gives more mental satisfaction and pleasure. Social service is all about caring and showing empathy and compassion towards our fellow countrymen. It encompasses taking care of the mental, emotional and physical well-being of all the people within the community. Such selfless compassion shown towards other would help in creating a moral and secure society. Helping people in need will give them the courage to overcome their problems against all odds in life. At this point in life where I have to decide on my professional future, I believe that choosing a career in social work would be more appropriate given my deep interest in the field. Having realized my true commitment to social work my family has been very supportive of my decisions and has encouraged me to pursue my career interests. I began my educational journey in social service with a bachelor’s degree in the subject in which I earned a cumulative GPA score of 3.5 according to the Dean’s list for the years 2011 and 2013. The bachelor degree program provided enriched me with a sound understanding about the subject and further instilled an interest to pursue my studies further in the field of social work. It is with this interest that I am now applying for the Master’s degree program in social work at the Worden School of Social Service. In order to be able to reach to and help people from diverse backgrounds I also focused on my linguistic skills and learnt Spanish. I am now well-versed in both English and Spanish languages. In addition to pursuing my education I also wanted to involve myself in social service and I hence enrolled as a volunteer in a home for foster children and families. I also had the opportunity to work in a homeless shelter which attended to the needs of adults, teenagers and families that were rendered homeless. I am currently working as a volunteer in a mental health institute that cares for mentally challenged teenagers and adults. As I have worked with the Hispanic population I believe that I would be more understanding of their needs and will be able to address their concerns in a better manner. My experiences have provided a good platform to explore and understand the true purpose of social service such as the importance of human relations, dignity and integrity of an individual and the value of social service ad social justice. My work experience also taught me to be sensitive towards cultural and ethical diversity among people and work to eliminate any kind of discrimination or oppression meted out to minority groups and individuals exploited on the basis of their race. Every experience that I stood to gain reinforced my interest in social work and reinforced a determination to give my best to the society. In addition, my work experiences have made me become more efficient and resourceful. They have also helped me learn the importance of team work and the need to build strong interpersonal relationships with working partners both in the internal and external work environments. My work experiences further instilled a passion within me to explore the subject further and learn the subject. Hence I am applying for this Master’s course in social work as I intend to learn the subject further and render my best services in this field. I identify with the title of a social worker and would embrace the responsibilities with great joy. I believe in my commitment towards this profession because I love the process; the obstacles; the research; the solutions and the services that I would stand to render to the society. I strongly believe that life is a never-ending learning process and I have just begun to polish myself in this field; but there are still countless things that I am yet to learn and understand. This course would enable me to achieve my career goal of being a good social worker and compete with the challenges in this field by expanding my knowledge and enriching my experiences. Each individual visualizes success according to their dreams and ambitions. How does one visualize their dreams? I have realized that the best answer to this question would be education and the subsequent knowledge that we stand to gain from it. My family has always encouraged me to study hard as they have always considered knowledge to be very precious and invaluable. Given the fact that social service involves selfless commitment and a strong desire to serve people they have been more than encouraging towards my career. Their motivation has given me the confidence to pursue my education earnestly and carve my own success in social service. With the experience that I would gain from this course I hope to create a niche for myself and make a fruitful contribution towards the society and fellow countrymen and in all the other endeavors that I would take up later in life. Personally, I see success as achieving the goals that you have set for yourself and becoming the person that you want to be and to meet this end I have to expand my skills and knowledge in order to be able to enrich the society and render my services to the needy. I consider myself fortunate to have found the occupation I love and not only would I enjoy applying my skills in this Master’s degree program, I would also thrive on the opportunity to prove myself as an asset to the Worden School of Social Service. In accordance with the mission of the School, I would strive to become a competent social worker and work towards the betterment of all classes of people with particular emphasis on Hispanic children. As required by the course, I ensure my commitment towards any form of social service such as direct practice, community service, supervision, education and research and active involvement in policy implementation and evaluation. In practice I would strive to uphold the values, ethics and mission of social service and would work towards enhancing the integrity of the profession within the community. My primary interest would involve advocacy for basic living conditions for all the people in the community regardless of class, race, gender or age and to being about equality among the people. I am keen to learn methods of educating people and helping them overcome all problems in life. I believe that all people have the right to lead a dignified life irrespective of their race, culture, gender and regardless of their social or economic status. I want to educate people on social justice as the needs of the vulnerable and oppressed individuals have to be met and fulfilled. I would also work to provide life skills to all the needy individuals by which they can build a career and uplift their lives. In order for this to be achieved all the members within a community need to be sensitized about the effects of poverty, oppression and discrimination. This will make them more committed towards social service and to bring equality among all the people.
