” Journal of Youth & Adolescence 40(5):595. Abstract: In the context of behaviors such as parental control and involvement in children’s education and how it relates to their cognitive abilities, ethnic/racial socialization has never been researched. This study focuses on testing the effects ethnic or racial socialization and parental control/involvement have on the education achievement and cognitive behavior of their children in the context of African American children. Out of a study sample of 92 mother-child dyads of African-American ethnic, two dimensions of ethnic or racial socialization including cultural socialization and cultural exposure are examined.

Fifty percent (50%) of the study sample consisted of females. 5th grade maternal involvement maternal reports were evaluated and used as a moderator in establishing the relationship between achievement, cognitive ability and ethnic/racial socialization. It was revealed-from a hierarchical regression analysis-that, cultural exposure mothers reports measured in grade 4 gave an indication of the children’s 5th grade scores of passage comprehension assessment. Additionally, there was an important suggestion that more parental involvement in a child’s education and greater cultural exposure predicted improved passage reading and comprehension scores gradually.

The effects of assessing aspects relevant to achievement and cognitive ability in African American children are studied. Brown, T. L., M.R. Linver, M. Evans, and D. DeGennaro. 2009. “African-American parents' racial and ethnic socialization and adolescent academic grades: teasing out the role of gender.” Journal of Youth and Adolescence 38(2):214-227. Abstract: This research inspected the relationship between ethnic/racial socialization and the academic achievement. A sample of 218 African-American youth of grades 9 to 12, 52% of which were girls from public schools in the North Eastern U.

S was studied. The study was specifically aimed at examining whether youth gender qualified the relationship between ethnic/racial socialization and academic grades. According to the results obtained, African American heritage, cultural values and aspects of ethnic socialization were associated with youth grades. In addition, youth gender was identified as a moderator of the link between the grades and socialization variables.
