Time and again, we have witnessed great successes when it comes to sports. Sports have become a means to unite the nation & removing barriers of religion, color, race, etc. But what is it that makes a team worth a terrific win? Is it the playing skills alone? No, there is definitely something more to it. A leader transforms the group into a “team”. A group is called a team only if it is focused towards a particular goal, people think about the team’s best rather than satisfying their own personal interests.

For example, a mob in a local train trying to push each other in the run of getting out of the train cannot be called a team, because they only think about meeting their own ends. Teams are building to achieve some common goals or objectives or in order to compete with some other teams. Teams may be formed for different purposes, for leisure, vocation. Numerous projects have been completed before the advent of project management with the help of teams. According to Katzenbach and Smith (2003), a team is "a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they are mutually accountable".

"A team is a group in which members work together intensively to achieve a common group goal". A team is "a group that works towards a single, common, objective". The members of a team might have different skills and objectives, but they should contribute to the overall success of the team. This can be well explained through the example of a football team. In a football team, one player might be a goal getter, the other one might be the keeper, one of them may be a right fullback, others are midfielders who ensure that the ball is linked between the attacker and the defender; but ultimately their overall efforts lead to attainment of their common objective which is victory for their team.
