Baseball and Philosophy Responsibilities of a coach Like any sport the baseball has some basic principles and philosophies from the perspective of a coach. The success of the baseball game team depends on the coach more than on the sport participants. The coach molds and develops the talent and abilities of young people. He not only has impact on the ability of a person but also on his attitude and personality. The parents, sport enthusiasts, community and sports participants have a lot of expectation from a baseball coach. The responsibility of a coach has many aspects as he has to ensure a safe physical environment to the players. He needs to nurture a friendly environment among the team players and also inspect the sport equipments for their safety. As per (Walden) ‘Playing baseball holds inherent risks, but as a coach you’re responsible for regularly inspecting the fields and equipment used for practice and competition”. The coach need to communicate positively with the players, parents, umpire, coaching staff and administrators. The coach need to teach the basic skills of baseball and help them to improve their knowledge about the game. He should teach the rules of the baseball game to the students. He should teach them to improve their skill as a part of competitive spirit. Also the value of fitness and its importance to the baseball game need to be illustrated to the players. Also it is the responsibility of the baseball coach to develop the character of the players. The responsibility of a coach can be further studied in the paper. Promoting confidence Prompting confidence is an important responsibility of a coach. Like any sports, baseball is a sport which requires confidence throughout the player exists in career. Baseball is a game of confidence and the coach need to improve the confidence of the player by establishing his belief in his abilities. When the team member has confidence then they can achieve success faster and also revive from failures. The coach need to encourage the player to remain calm under all pressures, during errors and failures. If the coach cannot promote the confidence of a player then he cannot prove to be a successful professional. The confidence of a player can be promoted by the coach by appreciating his skills and criticizing him less. By promoting confidence, the coach can enhance the skill, success and attitude of his team players. The baseball coach should remove all fear, inhibition and myths from the mind of the players. A coach can install many strategies to promote the confidence of a player and it depends upon the coach and his experience with the game. The success of a team does not only depend upon their skill but their belief in their ability to succeed. The coach need to do more than drills and game strategies as his need to reach the mind and heart of the players. As per ( Janssen) “While different strategies all can produce winning results, few baseball coaches can win without confidence”. Draw workout routine The coach has the main responsibility to draw a workout routine for his baseball team. Baseball is a game which requires precision. The right kind of work out regime can bring out the best of the baseball players. A work out regime needs to bring fitness, stamina and efficiency among the baseball players. The workout routine needs to be scheduled according to the age, experience and nature of the game. The basketball game players need to be focus on improving speed, agility and strength. The coach need to do his best to draw about a most comprehensive work out routine of the team players. The workout routine must increase the explosive speed, core strength, upper body strength, agility and lower body strength. The workout routine drawn by the coach need not harm the health of the players the coach need to look at the age, physical structure and nutrition of the players before implementing the workout routine. Moreover the coach needs to educate the players about the importance of fitness in the baseball game. The various works out pattern and their influence on the player and the game need to be illustrated by the coach. As per ( Waters) “Remember, although baseball may seem all upper-body, the real power and strength lies in your core and legs. Also remember, repetition is the key to success”. Also the coach needs to draw a long term workout routine which suits the players at its best. Attitudes toward game Every sportsperson need to have the right and healthy attitude towards the game ads to be a professional sportsperson. Right attitude means his mental and physical approach to the game needs to be healthy and ethical. The attitude of the player largely depends on the baseball coach. The coach need to build the character of the players in a tactful manner. The player needs to be given a positive approach to life and game. The coach need to eliminate jealousy, pride, ego and disrespect from the players. An egoistic and extremely proud player can only bring unhealthy competition and rivalry among team baseball players. The players and the coach himself need to keep a code of conduct to be in profession of baseball sports. According to (Kendall)“As a baseball coach, whatever your philosophy may be, you will need attitude change in some of your players to be successful”. The players need to have a professional attitude throughout his sports career. The coach need to understand the strength and weaknesses of the players and built the right kind of attitude among them. Baseball is a team sport and team spirit can only build with a right attitude. It is needed while practicing and playing the game. A good player with a bad attitude can spoilt the whole team. The character and attitude is the asset of a player along with his talent in the game. Treating the players A coach is a mentor, teacher, guide and friend to the baseball players. He needs to treat the players with respect, love and dignity. Every person demands respect and care from coach irrespective of his age, experience and talent. The players learn many manners and values from their coach and hence he is a role model too. The coach should not treat players harshly and criticizing. He should be treating them with care and understanding. Coach need to praise the players on their aheivienment and should never abuse or give bad remarks. Also the coach needs to look at the health and well being of the players. He should pay attention to their safety while practicing and playing game. All injuries need to be treated properly. The baseball coach should treat his players like slaves. They should feel freedom and happiness when communicating with coach. A friendly attitude in a sports coach is highly needed. Coaches must adjust to each person on the team. As per (Stanley) “Find out what each person reacts to best and coach accordingly. Remember, people first want to know that you care”. The players need complete moral support and encouragement from their coach and it is the responsibility of the coach to provide them with the same. The ability and character of the baseball players depend on the way the coach treat them. The players have expectation from their coach and he need to deliver them with love respect and care.
