Question 4 (7 marks)

A school is seeking to understand the determinants of their students University Admission grades. To determine this question, they take a random sample of students from the local area. The independent variables used to explain University Admission grades are the average number of hours spent studying each week, the average number of detentions each term and the gender of the student. Below are the multiple regression results.

  1. Write out the estimated regression equation (1 mark).

Estimated regression equation:

University admission score=-1.763+7.912(study hours)-0.924(detentions per term)+0.386(Gender)

  1. How much of the variability in ‘Admission Score’ is explained by the regression equation? (1 mark).

The equation explains 61.1 percent of the variability in the admission score

  1. State the hypotheses for testing the regression coefficient of ‘Study Hours’. Based on the results, what do you conclude? (2 marks).

HO: βSH= βD= βG=0; The independent variables have no significant relationship with admission score

HA: Any of the βs not =0; there is a significant relationship in the model

  1. Predict the Admission Score for a male student (coded 1) who studied 5 hours per week and was placed on detention one time each term. (1 mark).

Admission score=-1.763+7.912(5)-0.924(1)+0.386(1)

=37.259

  1. Comment on whether the assumptions of multiple regression are satisfied based on the plots shown below (2 marks).

The normality assumption is not satisfied because the P-P plot deviates from the straight line. Assumption that there are no outliers in the distribution is also violated as the graph of scope and detentions and score and study hours identify outliers. These violations means that at least some of the assumptions are not satisfied (Calberg, 2013; Chatterjee and Hadi, 2013).

This section has two (2) questions. Attempt ALL questions.

Answer all questions in the answer booklets provided.

Question 1 (15 marks)

  1. List and discuss three sources of qualitative data. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each source (5 marks).

Focus group is one of the sources of qualitative data. Its advantages include applicability with a wider population because it requires limited literacy, offer significant level of freedom to participants, and facilitate enthusiasm among participants. Its disadvantages include high cost and amount of time needed to organize and implement the group discussion, can compromise validity and reliability, and may be difficult to control (Gerrish and Lacey, 2013). Participants’ observation is another source of qualitative data and has such advantages as collection of rich and personal data, availability of the researcher to validate data, ability to derive comprehensive data. Its disadvantages include dependence on other sources of qualitative data (Fahertly, 2009). Interview is another source and has advantages such as more in-depth information access, ability to apply communication skills in data collection and ability to motivate response rate. Its disadvantages include high cost, high risk of bias, and time concerns (Kothari, 2004).
