SCARFACE: THE WORLD IS YOURS Introduction Audiences respond to movies in different ways. Some love the movie and enjoyit, and talk about it over and over, while others are annoyed about it, and criticize it, while others find the movie to be just OK. These reactions entail if a movie becomes a hit and or flops in the market. Movies have different reactions and relevance according to the period and audiences they were created for in that time. The movie Scarface of the 1932 version had Howard Hawks as the director. It is a Landmark the cinema history mostly the gangster film industry. It highlights the life of one gangster faction made of two mobsters, who unite to eliminate a rival faction, thus taking control of the illegal alcohol distribution business. Tony Camonte, who is a striving criminal, yearns for life luxuries and lusts for his new partner Johnny Lovo’s girlfriend, Poppy. He is also determined to rule the North side of the trade, which is under the control of a powerful gangster O’Hara, although his partner Lovo opposes. This film starts with a perfunctory warning that crimes are dictating society calling for the quick response of the government to take action. The movie is based on the periphery of celebrating criminal lifestyles and wildly violent with several murders, drive-by shootings as well as depicting the St Valentine’s Day Massacre. As the movie progresses, it displays a glamorous view, of the wealth up for grabs, in the criminal world, and explains the message that living well, and dying earlier while young, is an attractive option. The movie is about how the gangster factions dominate the streets and establish their territories. Conversely, the 1982 version produced by Brian DePalma is a remake of the initial version. It is an expansive felony yarn that follows the betrayal and failure that a lone man undergoes. Al Picano plays the role of tony Montana here, and he is, a rude and temperamental Cuban Immigrant, who through the assistance of his fellow refugee, escapes camp in Miami and his job, which was dish washing, in the setting of a universal drug empire. He rises to power, through the help of a big-time trader Robert Logia, who identifies potential in Montana. He speedily rises acquires power as a drug leader, who is being hunted by his adversaries. He is protective of his young sister from men looking her way and woos the powerful boss’ moll. This movie is narrated in three sections that narrates Montana’s rise to power, his life in paradise and finally his fall from glory. The opening act is used to indicate how the young Cuban’s future is vague. The subsequent part entails his novel life and decisions which eventually causes his downfall. The final part generates the ending of the fill which was resolute (Brody, 2012). Hawk’s Scarface was probably the greatest gangster movie of its epoch, as it still is significant currently although it has been 80 years since its production. The 1982 version remake by Brian has regularly been a polarizing effort among critics and film fawns, alike. The Hawks film version was set in such a manner that it abolished the timely social factor. It did not comprise an appropriate social bearing, and the film creators were persistently bold and steadfast, in their camerawork of creating a film that motivated, and loosely founded, on crime Lord Al Capone. Although, the characters in the movie were immense in exhibiting one of the most prominent thrillers in the gangster world, the movie was better placed in the 80s setting. The remake was as portrayed by the stirring character Al Pacino, which defined a generation. Whereas, the initial film used booze running the latter employed drugs, violence, clothing and music, to highlight the gangster lifestyle. The subsequent film also changed its setting from the initial film which was based on Chicago to Miami. The film’s calamitous ending, clearly depicts that the movie was best suited for the 80’s epoch (Brody, 2012). Whereas, the 1930 film, was focused on highlighting the effects of alcohol distribution in the city, and served, as a means of awakening the government, to take actions against the speedily increasing business, as was clearly depicted in the opening part of the movie the latter film was different. The latter film highlights how drug factions operate and how one can rise from having nothing to a position of immense wealth in a short period. It contains a strong performance, and bleak, gritty feeling to the audiences. Furthermore, it feels real and highly ingrained in people’s culture as most contemporary films. Comparing the two movies although both exhibited excellent performance through its characters the 1982, version slightly edges the initial version as it identifies with the modern drug barons and their activities in the world. However, some people consider the movie as one promoting the violent culture thus attracting much controversy. Although, the studio claimed that the movie was centrally concerned with the levels of violence, nothing in it depicted otherwise. The Scarface of 1932 was original and an example of outstanding creativity. It showcased that the idea will cut across audiences and entertains as well as educated. However, the 1982 version though it was a remake was easily related and compared to other movies of its time. Audiences and critics alike were disappointed in the film which they felt that it borrowed a lot from other movies such as the Godfather. Audiences who have viewed the godfather could easily find similarities in the two movies thus giving room for critics to devalue the film. Also, the inflated Cuban accent, which is adopted in the Brian film by the chief actor, which has resulted into being part of the pop culture, has highly perturbed viewers. On the modern humanity, people take such accent for granted and do not attach much meaning to the accent (Brody, 2012). The two movies also displayed leadership qualities differently. Although the leadership of the chief actors in the were mostly in the crime setting, they exhibited their leadership as the escalated in the positions of small time criminals to become one of the highest ranked position in the crime world. Tony in the 1932 film rose to power by combining efforts with another mobster leader to take control of the south territory. He rises from being a small time criminal, to be one of the powerful criminals in the region. The 1983 version also exhibits leadership lessons, as tony displays that for as the person to accomplish success he should not be distracted. Whereas his friend his ladies’ man, he remains focused on the goal. He believes that one has to make money in the US, get power before getting women. He is a stunt believer that each person has to prove himself, thus sizes his boss earlier on and concluded that he has more talent and leadership capability than his boss. Thus, he sets his ambitions, in acquiring the North side territory, despite his partner’s opposition (Brody, 2012). The film touches on culture erosion in issues such as incest. Although the first film did not highlight this fact clearly, it was clearer in the remake. In the early film, though the idea of incest was highlighted as Tony had a soft heart for his sister, Poppy was there top pleasure him, unlike in the subsequent movie remake. Hawks created this idea, and it is highly manifested in the latter version where tony is incestuous feeling toward his sister thus, focus on shielding her from other men. Also, the film educates people that during an escalating success, it is not possible for a person to respect any vital limit. Tony displays this, when he expresses sexual desire for his biological sister, and covets her until her demise. He disrespects the boundary of the family that is supposed to be distinct, and upheld (http://media.wiley.com, 2006). The 1932 movie is based on a social context which entailed people having an immense disliking to gangster life. During this period, there were widespread opinions that gangster films were glorifying violence, and therefore, they aimed to corrupt the minds of the young children and youth. This was highly publicized during the era as actual gangsters such as Al Capone were notorious in the nation. There was considerable tension that violence was overtaking the country; therefore, several movies of the time were advertised as created from the headlines or directly representing a modern urban reality. However, the latter movie is based in a setting where gangster lifestyle was gaining renewed acceptance and respectability in the modern genre. Unlike the initial film, which highly employed X motifs, this film had no use of such motifs. The 1983 movie is full of allusions and capitalism references. Montana is exhibited as a militant, political refugee that battled against Castro in Cuba, but in reality, he upholds no actual political beliefs, but only does not like people to guide him, on what to do. He has a personal goal of becoming rich because he believes that communism restricted his freedom to rise to the top. Scarface finds its opinion of crony capitalism in the rapid rise to the drug lord via murderous attrition. He has a mantra, the world his yours, which inspires him in his personal search for power and riches in wider limits (http://media.wiley.com, 2006). Also, the film represents gangster lifestyle as a way of male bonding and differentiates it from family sphere and the home, which is the conventional area for women. This chronological structure gives a vital magnitude to Tony’s obsessive in containing his sister at home with his mother to protect her from the planet of male violence. However, he does not succeed as eventually his sister dies in a hail of police shooting. Conclusion The Scarface from both eras is one of the funniest movies, as it never degenerates into farce but never a full comedy but maintains a lively setting so as the movie progresses the was no decrease in the tension or the feeling of the more seriously events. The movie depicts the discontented American dream, as people live contrary to the dream’s principles. The movie highlights the vices in society more alcohol and drugs which affect populations mostly the youth. The movie, although it indicts violence of mobs, it is popular because of the gangsters’ lifestyle, which tends to be a pleasurable life while terrorizing the world.
