Reproduction of Poetry According to Davis Douglas in the article “Works of Art in the age of digital reproduction,” there is nothing new that artists are capable of producing because the digital environment has provided ways of doing things such as reproduction like never before. Jill Magi supports this claim in the article, “Sona Books” and feels that as a publisher and editor, change and any progress in the community should be taken serious. According to Davis, there is a great flaw in the intellectual property rights of the artists’ work that has been contributed by the internet and the new technology in general (582-383). Most artists get income through publication of their work yet even amid the copyright protection laws that are put in place most people freely download music, drawings, paints without fear. Introduction of new technology has enabled increasing downloads of most music and other forms of artistic work via the internet. This has really brought a big lose in the art industry. People find it easy and less costly to download their favorite music, paints, poetry, and drawings purchasing them from the required sources. It is interesting to note that most of the people downloading music think that it is not against the law to download artistic work provided the download is not done for commercial purposes. Technology actually is the major contributor of universal reproduction of poetry (Davis 381). Because everyone would want to listen to music over their phones and any other gadget but the music is expensive, they would better resort to cheaper and high quality downloads. Unfortunately, it is very likely that even instituting strong legal regulations and conditions may not prevent free downloads of music since nothing is done about illegal downloads. In the contemporary society, several artistic works have completely lost audience because of the analogue nature of their work that has increasingly been facing serious challenges (Davis 383-6). The new technology platform is by the day drawing more attention especially from researchers from both the academic and industrial sector as they apparently become more intrigued by their cost and wide reaching ability. Ever since they came into existence, technology platform has drawn millions of users who religiously follow the technological sites and are part of their daily activity. The major technological characteristics and specifications are in most cases similar but the culture, orientation of any particular one widely varies, and is divergent based on the target audience The landscape of technology has been increasingly changing in the current years. The change has originated from several sources such as service improvement, technological innovation, and alterations done on the political economy of the art and poetry production, as well as changing nature of response by users to the technological capabilities that are accorded them (Davis 382-5). Sometime back, the outlets for interaction and sharing of information were few and critically expensive. There were few channels offering interaction platforms to the community. New technologies such as social media have now changed all that. It is cheap, affordable, and readily available and offering a wide range of services and diversity that leaves the online community spoilt for choice. However, it has come with its own demands and challenges. The most obvious unique characteristic in latest technology is more towards the way they give users the ability to be coherent and visible on the network platform than the way they allow strangers to meet and interact freely (Davis 382-384). The result lies in creating an alliance between two or more different people that in a different set-up would otherwise not have met. However, this is not the ultimate goal and the connection is in most cases existent between latent ties that enjoy an offline connection. A common observation is that many of these large social networks subscribers do not have a target to network and meet new individuals. Their focus actually lies on passing information to individuals who are already in their lives and an active part of their established social circle. Emotional connection with the artists is very important but it is an aspect that is no longer given special attention as it used to be. Nowadays, reproduction of artistic work such as poetry is rampant and audiences are not bothered about the original producers or designers of artistic work (Davis 381-383). Emotional connection while using designed products by the original owner may coerce the audience to buy the products as this leads to personalization and customization of the product. The users feel the sense of owning the products since their emotional attachment is taken into consideration. Positive reception of nature induces affirmative response from the public as love for nature is considered preponderance in product design. Visceral or aesthetical appreciation should not be separated due to their importance in people’s lives. However, this has not been the case since the introduction of new technology. Beauty and excellence is very important as it strengthens the sense of belonging. There is therefore a great need of appreciating attractiveness and brilliance in art work. Staying away from the digital devices is not an easy thing for the current generation even though it is characterized by things such illegal downloading because of convenience and low cost. Technology has manipulated people’s senses and thoughts. All the senses such as smell, hearing and seeing functions have really reduced and dulled because of electric waves as well as wireless transmissions. Love and passion for digital devices has definitely overcome every other thought and sense. Most artists do not get credit for their work as it used to be in the past. People no longer admire beautiful sculptures, architectures and other forms of aesthetic especially after coming across them in the internet. The artwork can be traced back to cave painting, stonework, and earthenware that were accompanied with evolution of materials from rocks, feathers and fabrics to cloth, clay, glass and fabrics. Currently even a single person who may use technology to draw and even come up with a great artistic work can do most of these (Davis 382-4). Past artistic work hugely influenced the current culture in various ways particularly the ability to build up and maintain the social illusions of splendor. The ultimate influence of the creative work has resulted into accumulation of artistic works that shows a communal expression of the cooperative life. However, the current reproduction of artistic work tends to kill the meaning and importance of art as it used to be. Currently, there are few boxes packed with notebooks full of poetry, drawings, and other artworks. Issues such as keeping old poet books that are not attached to the ring binding are treated as old fashioned. Artists who used to boost their talents by entering poetry competitions seeking publication and sharing their work with the public is no longer significant because the artistic works are available everywhere in the internet where they are being reproduced (Magi n.p). On arrival of the internet and the wider use of e-mail and the web, posting artistic work online leads to interference of piracy rights and encourages reproduction of art work (Davis 383-5). Unfortunately, becoming a professional artist requires online presence either by use of social network, website or via online gallery. For good online presence, an artist must initially attend a webinar to enhance art career (Magi n.p). Online presence provides a good way of advertising ones work to the potential customers. Sites such as Webinar help artists to promote themselves and receive artistic instructions from great artists. However, there are greater damages that online presence and technology have brought to the artists than good. The two articles are closely related because they address some of the challenges affecting current artists. Magi explain challenges affecting publishers and editors across the world. Jill Magi doubts whether her poetry will be read even though she feels that writing poems are her duty and privilege. It is clear, according to Davis that poetry reproduction is rampant, and Magi is one of the artists experiencing reproduction issues. Although Magi is concerned with reaching wider audience, her original work may reach only a few audience because of reproduction. Reproduction is therefore a hindrance and a huge obstacle to most artists whose original work do not reach their targeted audience as they may wish.
