In his experiment Gomberg tried to prepare h hexaphenylethane from triphenylmethyl chloride and zinc in benzene in Wurtz reaction from which it was discovered that product based on its behaviour towards iodine and oxygen, was far more reactive than anticipated. From the results of his experiment solutions containing the radical are yellow in colour when the temperature of the solution is increased and the colour becomes even more intense as the equilibrium shifts. On other hand the solution becomes less yellow when it is cooled (Rowlands, 2009). From his experiment it was deduced that when the same solution is exposed to air the radical rapidly oxidizes to the peroxide as shown in the diagram below changing the color of the solution from yellow to colorless as well as the radical reacts with iodine to triphenylmethyl iodide.

After this discovery the correct quinoid structure for dimer was later on suggested in early 1904 after which the structure was later on abandoned by the scientific community. Research continued by Polymer scientists on the discovery of radicals in which they devised a way of forming carbon-carbon bonds(C-C bond) via radical addition. After this discovery many other synthetic techniques followed, and radical reaction have become an integral part of chemistry which over the years has been in wide use up to date(Zard, 2003). Radical reactions which are chemical reactions involving free radicals have over the years become popular among organic chemists as they have proved to achieve chemoselective transformations of predictable regio- and stereochemical outcomes with use of mild conditions. The introduction of radical reducing agents has led to a rapid growth in the number of organic transformations that make use of radicals to affect dehalogenation. Lin et al., (2011) assert that the introduction of the radical reducing agents has resulted in the rapid growth in numerous organic transformations that do utilize radicals in the effect of dehalogenation. This process is also accompanied by other reactions like ring closure.
