The Art Technical Training in Different Spectra - Admission/Application Essay Example

My fascination on literature, my academic background and an urge to have the of the art technical training in different spectra of the led me to the idea of undertaking graduate study at the University of Maryland. The eventuality of my passion for reading was the development of interest in the 19th century literature especially in Romantics, the Romantic Movement in European literature. This interest was well motivated by the academic tint added to my interest as a part of my undergraduate study. The contrast in the way literature looked at the life and times of the Enlightenment Age and the Classic fascinated me. The academic study shifted my attention more towards the influence and importance of modern age literature as most of the works I’ve done had been about the authors of this century. As an undergraduate I did dissertations on Alfred de Musset’s Lorenzaccio, Stendhal’s Chartreuse de Parme and a personal research on Napoleon’s image in Romantic literature. My present subject of research is ‘Gerard de Nerval and his attitude towards Orient in his Voyage en Orient’ which is being done at the University of Tehran as part of my Masters Degree curriculum. However I have particular interest in the works of André Malraux and George Perecand and few other novelists of the 20th century. My deep prior learning on the history of French literature also encouraged me to have an interdisciplinary work combining political history & literature. I intend to make my research lead towards a professional career. As the research would gain me enough understanding in literature, history and politics, I could serve as a knowledge base to answer questions on a period, a culture or a writer. This in turn is a necessity to chase my career goal to be a university teacher, which I have nurtured through my desire to teach and through the experiences I have gained while working as a teacher in a local school. Extensive individual work and group research would be required to get into the minute details of the subject resultantly serving to develop my capacity and knowledge. Huge lacunas and limitations like lack of resources and limited availability of efficient supervisors in Iran shorten the scope of my further research and study within the country. This became quite evident to me, when I had the idea of comparing the work of André Malraux to that of Ernest Hemingway. As I initiated the study, I got discouraged by my professors because of the insufficient expertise in American as well as French literature within the department. When it came to the case of other group studies, the financial, cultural and political pressures made it almost impossible to pursue a project. The trial to do some thing really new and innovative won’t be supported by the conventional approach of the University system which was merely training their students to be the consumer of others’ efforts resulting in the death of many ideas even before they were born. My concerns towards the nature too couldn’t make a place in the study environment as it was not considered to be important. All these factors would together stop me from having an interdisciplinary approach in the research and thus acquire a better understanding of new subjects related to literature and history. I find University of Maryland as an effective place to pursue my graduation as this would help me chase my dreams in the methodology of my preference. Studying in UMD would fulfill my goal of being a member of a group that tries to introduce new ways in thinking and living, as this university possesses such groups and welcomes the initiatives of talented people. My innovative research ideas would be welcomed by these groups and would contribute ideally towards my career and in general to the academics. More over a review of other colleges and a consideration on UMD’s prestige, reputation, international student facilities and personal progress avenues convinced that University of Maryland would be the best choice for me. Since UMD is among the best universities & as it holds facilities in accordance with my ideals and abilities, it is my strong wish to get the opportunity to study there. The diverse experiences and backgrounds I have had, added with an urge to get out of the limitations to grow personally, professionally and academically deems me to be fit to peruse graduation from the University of Maryland, an elite university acclaiming its position to be the best in the world. I possess an ambitious personality & always tried to think out of the box. I was always inspired by the determination of my father who strived in hardships to be successful. He proved to me how hard work and dedication can lead one to prosperity regardless of the social, financial and communal backgrounds which restricts growth. After all, being the first child for my parents helped me become independent and mature early in life and this induced a self discipline into my character. My family though a small one has strong views on the relevance of education and has always encouraged me to have best of it from the best resources. We as a family believed that only education could help one grow out of the socially stringent communal thoughts. This strong insight made me determined to get admitted to the University of Tehran, one of the best universities in my country. The competition was enormous but the urge in me prompted me to work hard resulting to come out as the sixth among the 1500 competitors in the entrance examination. Further, I didn’t give up the motivation and proved to be number one in the class and a consistent member of the University’s Brilliant Talents through out my tenure in the university. I understood English as a necessity to indulge into global education and research scenario. I have had the passion to learn English since my childhood as inspired by my uncle whom I have always seen as a successful person settled in America. I always used to practice my English by talking to him. When I was studying for my Bachelors degree I took some English courses in the faculty. I could prove myself to be the best in the course though many professional experts shared the classes with me. This prompted my professor, Dr. Shokouhi to advice me on perusing English Linguistics for graduate studies and he even gave me chance to attend his linguistics classes to get familiar with the subject. However my choice was to prefer French literature. My leadership abilities were also proven as I enthusiastically led the show to arrange cultural groups and allied events while being in the university. I inspired the faculty, co-students and some of the seniors to organize a weekly discussion forum on English and French. While serving as the director of the forum, I not only streamlined my skills to lead and to organize, but also provided my friends with opportunities to develop their language through extensive writing opportunities. Later I developed a French theater which provided me and my friends with an effective learning environment well served through an entertaining methodology. However it was disheartening that these efforts though proved to be successful in their intention, was not given encouragement and was restricted by stringent rules and immature societal feelings. My efforts were at times nipped as a bud and were advised not to be off the road. A graduation from the University of Maryland would give wings to my talents and would provide ample stages to use my abilities for great purposes. The urge for a change, search for resources and unaccountable professional and personal growth opportunities encouraged me to pursue graduation in UMD. Its statement about eliminating discrimination is an inspiration for me to find a healthy study environment. The admission webpage suggests that choosing a university determines someone’s path to future. I’ve chosen University of Maryland because it can for sure provide me with the opportunity to fulfill my dreams & would assist me in my way to become a more successful person on whom others could depend and count. My proven academic skills, determination to work hard, streamlined leadership skills, team adaptation skills all puts me in a position to be an ideal candidate contributing positively towards the diversity of the academic community of the esteemed University of Maryland.
