It is important that educators incorporate the development of creativity in their classrooms since creative thought processes and imagination are paramount in aspects of children’s development throughout the school curriculum. However, the emphasis on academics has limited children’s exposure to more creative activities in school.  Many educators are still stuck with the notion that the key to developing intelligence is transmitting knowledge learned from the past, so the disciplines of traditional subject areas are given priority to fill students’ cognitive capacities.

As educational philosophies evolved, so did teaching methods.  The theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, Gardner, and other modern-thinkers have expanded educator’s thinking that intellectual development should not neglect the child’s innate creativity (Mayesky, 1990). This research attempts to investigate some school curricula on its inclusion of creativity development in their students.   Children will be interviewed to determine if they are provided opportunities to be imaginative and creative in their schooling.

Likewise, practitioners will be probed on their views and opinions about the curriculum they implement through a questionnaire.  In addition, some ongoing lessons shall be observed to see if strategies integrate creativity in the children’s learning. This paper aims to investigate a mainstream school to establish if opportunities to be creative in their learning across the curriculum are provided to Key Stage 1 children.
