Analysis on the Crisis of Liberal Education “The Crisis of liberal education is viewed as the initial magnitude of intellectual crisis that constitutes the crisis peoples civilization. The underlying problem of liberal education results from the fantastic development of specialization. The article provides and demonstrates the latest manifestations of crisis that has happened for more than two centuries. Moreover, it elucidates significant subject to the society that curriculum of modern universities have always been surrounded by controversies. Curriculum’s contemporary critics are wrong. Liberal education ideals of the American people are depicted to be obscure, the result of several diverse characters and historical. The principle visible in the education system is tolerance thereby respecting rights and dignity of every individual. Bloom is a significant figure within education by translating numerous famous works thus making it easier for populace to share information. Moreover, Bloom’s theory aided in development of openness within the present America needs a reinvention of her universities. Openness theory is relativism and stipulates equal value in all endeavors. Most universities in America have made it simple for the society to understand the current universities curriculum. The success of re-invigorating of the universities and colleges curriculum in America thus utilizes original texts and materials. For instance, individuals ought to study Dante’s inferno rather than a classical poem synopsis. Allan Bloom thesis statement in “The Closing of the American mind” is primarily about the decay in our modern universities. Bloom argues in this article that the twentieth century America has experienced a political and social, intellectual crisis. However, blame the high technology, sexual revolution and introduction of diversification in culture curriculum at the expense of the classics resulted to the production of students who lacked values and wisdom. Democracy practiced in America has been the gateway vulgarized continental thought of despair and nihilism, as well as for relativism perceived as tolerance. Bloom strongly does not agree with the humanity and philosophy modern movements. The analysis of ordinary languages or reasonable positivism has disregarded the significant political and social humanizing issues that fail to fulfill the students needs. The article is divided into three different parts, which discusses the state of morality and intellectuality within our modern universities, tracing of roots of relativism and modern intellectual and proper relationships among the students within the society as well as the university (Bloom, 2012, 145-212). Therefore, capability of dissolving imperatives that are moral, which was communicated via the genuine philosophy, subsequently elevating, and broadening the intellects of individuals that constantly engages with these imperatives Imperative is as a creation of the void in the American souls that could result in leaping of the demagogic radicals, which was exemplified by the student leaders of the 1960s. On the other hand, the great calling of philosophy being understood as the “freedom of thought” has been bypassed by ideological or pseudo-philosophical ideas. Bloom’s philosophical and classical orientation has led to his critique concerned with contemporary social movements that are at play in our society or the universities. Bloom considers that when contemporary liberal education fails, then the result will be sexual habits and sterile social habits in the universities affecting the modern students. He also argues that commercial pursuits are highly valued with modern students than love, the quest for philosophic truth, as well as the pursuits of glory and honor that are equally civilized. Bloom examines the philosophical effects of popular music, pop music and rock music on the students. The analyzes resemblance of the Frankfurt School works placed in a context of history from the platos republic to the longings of the Nietzsche’s Dionysian. Bloom gives fresh attention to the industry after treating it from the legitimate philosophical interests, while having the teenagers, the children and its top performers as his target marketing (Bloom, 2012, 145-212). From my point of view, I feel that the arguments of Allan Bloom are correct, and therefore there are several implications that can be drawn from his arguments. Rock and pop music has only a single appeal, which is a barbaric appeal to the sexual desires, but not the desires of love, not to eros, but the sexual desires that are untutored and undeveloped. This can result to the initial emanations of sensuality emerging from younger children. Rock also has the capability of giving younger children on a silver platter that could make them understand many things that they are supposed to learn when they mature (Bloom, 2012, 145-212). Bloom considers music as a medium for the human soul. For instance, pop culture is working against the goals of education that gives most university students a short of bliss that is cheap at the expense of a longer and an everlasting happiness. Rock music provides immature ecstasy and is likened to drugs since it is capable of inducing the exaltation that is naturally attached to the completion enormous endeavors-victory, such as in wars, truth discovery, and devotion to religion, consummated love and artistic creation. My perception supports the arguments of Allan Bloom using the additional aid of my experience that those students that have seriously used drugs as a result of pop music may have difficulties in having the enthusiasm of great expectations. The implications can be likened to the colors being drained from their lives resulting to them in viewing everything as black and white. . However, these students may function well, but dryly and routinely. They might have their energies being sapped making them expect just a living from the activities of their lives. Whereas the primary function of liberal education is to encourage and give hope that the pleasant life is a good life and most pleasant life is the best life. Moreover, I feel that someone addicted to rock music especially at the absence of strong counteractions will have a similar effect to that of being addicted to drugs. However, these students may manage in getting over the music or having a reduced passion for it. Nevertheless, they depict that men usually accept the reality as harsh, unattractive and grime coupled with mere necessity. For instance, particular populace used walkman for a duration time and only realizes that he/she is deaf when the walkman no longer works. In conclusion, university student likes listening to pop and rock music. The effect of rock music on the young concurs with Bloom’s description. Rock music is appealing to the rawest passions and emotions thus resulting to indulgence of emotions and passions. Indulgence of emotions and passions include sex, anguish, love, anxiety, heartbreak, anger and loss that often happens even before we experience them at the first hand. Nevertheless, it does not only create distorted expectations to us when we ultimately go through those experiences, but it also makes such experiences appear duller when they happen to us. Moreover, the implication of rock music, much of our emotions and psychology are demanded by rock music so that it can take them away from us resulting to lack of them when we really need them.
