This dissertation seeks to establish the relevance of employee engagement indices as performance measures and indicators with practical use in organizations.  It examines the effectiveness of employee engagement indexing as a common practice among institutions in measuring organizational performance.  The study found that employee engagement indices bore significant relationship to certain aspects of companies’ operational performance, to degrees that vary among the scale and type of the organization.  Human resources aspects of operations that are significantly related to EEI are the line manager’s actions, the degree to which employees believe management will take action based on the EEI survey, the employees’ workload, their pay, the team with which they work, and the organizational policies and practices that impact upon their working conditions.

Overall, the employee engagement index is an effective tool in improving performance, provided the EEI is formulated according to firm-specific factors and condition, and provided they are analyzed consistently and refined strategically over the long term.

This chapter introduces the problem which the dissertation seeks to address, and defines the context in which the problem is situated.  A problem may be viewed from several perspectives, and by defining the context and describing the historical background that gave rise to the problem, the dissertation is thus delimited and made into a more realistic topic for research.  The resulting research becomes definitive in scope, because academic research should be nuanced according to one perspective (Singh & Nath, 2010).  It is incoherent to derive the truth concerning everything about one topic based on a single research agenda.

The problem will be introduced by describing its background, and articulating the objectives which are sought to be attained through the research.  From the objectives, the research questions are formulated.  The questions serve to focus the research effort during the data gathering and analysis.  The purpose of structuring the research pursuant to the objectives is to be able to arrive at a cogent conclusion that squarely addresses the research problem.

The fact that modern business demands more efficiency and higher productivity than in the past cannot be disputed. This situation has come about as a result of various factors that affect the business environment (Ologbo and Saudah, 2011). These factors include technological advancements, increased competition, and heightened customers and shareholders’ expectations among others.
