Task: Peer Review Paper Reviewer: History and Political Science Review of “US Policy toward Venezuela” Introduction US Policy towards Venezuela is a well structured paper that highlights exactly what is required. The paper respects all the forms of article papers and creates a clear picture of what is taking place between United States and Venezuela. When a person goes through it, he or she is able to understand all concepts brought out and be able to learn new things that he or she never knew before. For example, I never knew that the current president of Venezuela is called Chavez. However, the paper also contains a few mistakes here and there that the author must work on in order to become a great author (Shifter 12). The ultimate aim of this peer review context is to help improve my colleague’s paper through pointing out strengths and weaknesses that seemed to be unclear to the author. It also helps improve the author’s editing skills after learning his mistakes and correcting them. Therefore, the review analyzes the entire paper highlighting the most important things that are wrong in the paper and need to be corrected and those that are good and deserve to be appreciated. Main points The cold war between US and Soviet Union influenced US policy toward Venezuela. The Monroe Doctrine policy and the Organization of American States (OAS) played a major part in building the conflict of US and other nations. Venezuela has been bitter and resentful with the US and that contributed to Venezuela president Chavez to make democracy in the country an intimidating influence to other people. All nations in the American continent have wished to be part of the United States (O'Gorman 88). The Venezuela’s President Chavez despite being daunting to democracy in the country, he will still be heard since he still has the support of its citizens. The United States foreign rule has to associate in democracy in Venezuela in presence or absence of President Chavez. Therefore, the outstanding policy of US towards Syria is that democracy and equitability must be practiced in Venezuela. In order to gain appropriate influence and promote proper relationship, US must seek good cooperation from Latin America since through managing Venezuela, the other Latin American countries will fear how it deals with them ((Restrepo 145). Evidence The US and Venezuela’s policy of foreign association has been one of the repression since the beginning of cold war. The justification to sustain this claim is the fact that United States has never been in good terms with the Soviet Union (Restrepo 146). This is because while United States was advocating and promoting democracy, the Soviet Union was busy trying to stretch communism. That is why United States is facing challenges in implementing democratic freedom in Venezuela. In fact, it is the same reason as to why Venezuela’s president greatly believes in communism and rejects democracy of people (Shifter 102). The Monroe Doctrine policy suggested that the whole of Western Hemisphere was the subject of power for United States and needs to be implemented the way it is. The US was able to repress all the disputes in an intransigent manner. The associations never developed and that is one of the contributory factors to problem today. The US is facing many challenges because it neglected the Latin Americans and they have shifted their interest to the Soviet Union and China for help. This means that United States need to be straightforward and frank with the foreign policy towards Latin Americans and associate them fully (O'Gorman 123). Once it becomes open and sincere to the Latin Americans in Venezuela, they will develop a positive attitude towards it and shift their support from President Chavez to support it. This shows that the research conducted for the review was sufficient. The author was also careful and very concise in blending his main points and his evidence. Therefore, the paper is well researched and is up to date. Besides, the paper has a very good flow where it begins by explain the root problem between United States and Venezuela. It then explains how the situation is and winds up by providing suitable solution that can enable US to succeed in its plans in order to enable Venezuela to acquire democracy and equitability. Moreover, the entire paper is too logic and easy to understand (O'Gorman 93). The sentences use simplified English with simple vocabularies that are well understood. In addition to that, it also employed good use of punctuation marks. For example, the paper contains no instance of bad full stop or comma usage. All the sentences begin with a capital letter and obey the principles of sentence structure (Dale J. et al. 451). However, the paper also contains a number of misconceptions and mistakes. A good article or academic paper must follow apparent writing style but that paper never has that. For example, the paper is not referenced and does not have supporting words. There is no evidence where the research was conducted and how it was done. At the end of the paper, there are references but no form of in-text citations (Dale J. et al. 147). Besides, the paper contains lots of grammar errors that need to be worked on to avoid losing marks in class work and degradation by people who read it. For example, a sentence like, “all the Americas have wanted to be part of the United States, Venezuela is no different.” The word Americas stands for people in America thus it should be the Americans. Besides, I strongly feel that it was to be written, “Just like other nations in America, the Venezuela citizens have been wishing to be part of the United States’ citizens (Restrepo 167). The organization of the paper is also wrong because there is no uniformity in the entire paper. Some paragraphs are very long and tiresome to read through while others are too short and never hits the point. For example, the third paragraph in the paper is very short and unclear while the fourth paragraph is too long with too many points that could be split into other paragraphs. The paper also contains some instances of very long sentences in the paper that do not give the reader time to breath. One of the most important things that never misses in such papers is thesis statement, however, this paper does not have one (O'Gorman 122). Conclusion The US Policy toward Venezuela is a good paper that was well researched and has the best association between the topic and the content. The paper contains very good and well composed points, which are followed with suitable evidence. However, it also contains a few mistakes here and there that need to be addressed properly.
