The notion that counsellors are more effective if they have experienced problems similar to those faced by their clients can be argued as true. This is because if a counsellor has undergone a similar experience as the client, they can empathize with the client, giving them the competency of handling the client.

Professional intimacy helps a counsellor interact with the client in a manner that personal dignity is maintained. Professional intimacy in counselling sessions helps in building trust and it is key to the establishment of a strong therapeutic relationship that is necessary for successful counselling.

To fix on a reflective listening skill, I have to set aside my pre-conceived feelings regarding what the client wants and instead concentrate on understanding what the client is trying to put across.
